~ About the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park ~
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, established in 1916, displays the results of 70 million years of volcanism, migration, and evolution -- processes that thrust a bare land from the sea and clothed it with complex and unique ecosystems and a distinct human culture. The park encompasses diverse environments that range from sea level to the summit of the earth's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. Kilauea, the world's most active volcano, now taking a pause, offers scientists insights on the birth of the Hawaiian Islands and visitors' views of dramatic volcanic landscapes.

Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities. In recognition of its outstanding natural values, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has been honored as an International Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site.

The National Park Web site provides up-to-date information, tours, and hiking trails.

I looked quite a bit to find the perfect place to stay in volcano, and I’m happy to say I think I picked the best home on the listings. Peggy the host was very accommodating, and responded very quickly to any queries. She definitely put a lot of personal touches in the home, from the fresh fruit, and the fresh flowers, and anything I needed (amenities) and more was available to make my stay more comfortable. It is a beautiful home, with a very secluded and tranquil location with a tremendous amount of privacy, but still very close to the volcanoes national Park. Wish I had more time there to enjoy everything the place had to offer.

The most magical place! The garden and the house and the Tranquility are all you need in this part of the world. Host was absolutely incredible, super responsive, and just a delight to work with. If you’re looking at this and the dates match, just push play!

Peggy's property was simply wonderful. She was an amazing host. The home was very secluded and comfortable. Peggy was very responsive and helpful. She let us know that Kilauea was active and we were able to witness the 500 ft lava fountain!

We loved staying here! It was clean, quiet and peaceful. It felt like an oasis. We loved the sounds of all the tropical birds in the surrounding forest. It was also VERY convenient to the Volcano National Park. Peggy was a fantastic host and the communications with her were great. We would stay there again if we come back!!

The check in instructions were clear and helpful, especially since we had no internet as we got close to the property. The property itself was clean and amazing relaxing. It also contained one of the best stocked kitchens we've seen. This is a A rental - thank you Peggy for letting stay in your home.

This was our first time staying at Pele’s Secret Garden. The property’s interior and exterior and the location were all five star. Property was extremely well kept, furnishings up to date. Peggy was timely and on point with her communications. We had everything we needed to make this an extremely enjoyable stay. We definitely plan to stay again.

The home was easy to find but felt secluded in the rainforest. Very convenient to stores, restaurants, and Volcanoes Park. Peggy was a great host with coffee provided, plenty of kitchenwares, towels, and blankets. Very thoughtful with umbrellas, flashlights, and even a basket full of warm socks by the door. I would definitely stay here again!

The house is clean and comfortable. Location to Volcano Nat Park excellent. Check in and communication was very good. We did have a little difficulty early on with getting hot water. Not a big deal once we figured it out. Would recommend!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pele's Secret Garden. With all the of the windows we felt completely immersed in the rainforest yet were cozy and warm with a fire each night. We didn't even need to leave the house for birdwatching. Morning coffee on the lanai was a pleasure, soaking in the peace and quiet. It was as comfortable as staying at your best friends' home. Peggy was easy to communicate with and treats her guests well. She exudes the true Aloha spirit. We will be back!

I can't give enough praise to how incredible of a time we had in this home thanks to the secluded and private location, incredible interior, and some of the best hospitality I've experienced from Peggy. For anyone who needs two bedrooms (and a very comfortable couch) for a visit to Volcano National Park and the surrounding area, this is one of the best places you can find.If you can get lucky with clouds and moonlight, the stargazing from the front yard was nearly just as good as at Mauna Kea!

This property is not your typical VRBO!!I have stayed in over a dozen VRBOS Several in the islands and they were all nice but this place was furnished and decorated as if no one but the owner was staying here. The art work and the details were like you were in an art gallery.Anything and everything you need is there!! The place and the grounds were gorgeous beautiful setting in a tropical rain forest!! Perfect location for the Volcano National Park. I will stay here again when I come back to this side of the big island!! No need to look for any other place you would be wasting your time!! I sent a several messages to my host and always responded with kindness in less than a minute . I would hive it more than 5 stars if I could!!!Thank you so much for sharing your place!!

This is one of the most peaceful places that we have ever stayed in. We sat on the covered porch, listening to the rain filter through the leaves. It was absolutely silent at night, even when we had the screen doors open to the night.Peggy was wonderful and sharp to communicate with. Thank you for sharing your lovely home. One note: we did not see any grocery stores. There are a couple nearby general stores with some food. Bring your food from Hilo which has every store possible

Very comfortable place with everything you need, just like at your own home. We really enjoyed the privacy and waking up to singing birds in the surrounding forest. We were lucky to experiece an eruption episode at the kilauea caldera and being only 5 mins away made visiting it day and night very easy.

This location is a bit out of the way for touristy stuff as it’s 40 mins from Hilo and 2 hours from Kona. The reason I selected this spot is that it is only 15 mins from Volcanos National Park which was my goal for this trip. It’s a beautiful home 2 bed 2 bath. Great communication with the property owner. Comfy clean and has everything you could need. I recommend you check the fridge before you buy grocery as there’s some of the essentials already there. We came in January and it was a bit cold a night lows in the 40s Fahrenheit. Also a reminder that the island is a tropical wet location so if you have mold allergies well that’s the island…

This is one of the best, unique and wonderful places we have ever stayed!! The home and surroundings are beautiful inside and out. The home is super clean, well stocked with everything you could possibly want or need and then some - including fresh fruit and coffee beans!! The beds, linens and furnishings are very comfortable. The outside areas have plenty of seating areas to enjoy the peace and tranquillity. Peggy was an excellent host!! She provided great information and was always available if we needed anything. We would definitely love to stay here again and would highly recommend it to anyone planning on staying in the area. Thanks again!! K&P

Pele’s Garden is beautifully furnished and decorated, comfortable, quiet and peaceful. The kitchen is fully stocked with assorted pantry items, coffee beans & grinder, coffee maker and french press. Peggy also provided eggs, butter, and half & half. Although the property is less than a mile from hwy 11, it is VERY dark and lushly vegetated. I loved that there were flashlights. There was even a basket of chunky foot warming stocks. The bathroom showers had professional shampoo, conditioner and body wash dispensers. The towels were luxurious. The beds were sooo comfortable. We stayed 3 nights. We hope to stay at Pele’s Garden again!

We loved everything about our stay here. Peggy is a very considerate host: when we arrived, we found a tray of bananas, papaya, and pineapple + a well-stocked refrigerator. We loved drinking our morning coffee on the wraparound deck & listening to the whistles of tree frogs in the evening. The photos are beautiful, but the in-person experience is even better.

This was the exceptional award winning stay of all the places we stayed in during our two week visit to Kauai and the Big Island including resorts and VRBOs. Peggy, our host, is clearly felt in this lovely and well appointed home. This is not just a rental, but a home, beautifully constructed and furnished. Not that we do any less anywhere we stay, Peggy's home makes you want to care for it like it was your own. The cottage sits in what is essentially a rainforest like environment without the rain (I'm sure it gets rain because of the lushness, but not during our visit), and at dusk you are serenaded by tree frogs, which makes cocktails on the long deck a real treat. Peggy was always accessible for questions, and she is an exceptional host. Eggs were in the refrigerator, fruit on the counter, coffee beans with grinder were provided as well as sugar and coffee mate (I got my own half and half though). I highly recommend this cottage, only minutes from Volcano National Park.

Peggy's home is very well planned, eco-friendly, gorgeous, and includes a generously stocked kitchen. We loved the windows all around looking out into the rain forest. The flowers and fresh fruit inside were a lovely touch and we appreciated the juice, coffee, tea and food items on hand. The beds and living room sofa were comfy and check-in was easy once we realized the door is a slider and stopped trying to pull it open!

My husband and I absolutely LOVED our stay at Pele’s Secret Garden. We didn’t want to leave. The views from EVERY room are stunning; lush, green, and tropical. The only sound you’ll hear are the faint voices of the tiny birds who visit in the morning. We truly felt like we were in our own world…no traffic noise or even the site of neighbors. If you want to get lost in your own paradise, come and stay here and warm your soul by the exquisitely designed fireplace. Thank you Peggy for your wonderful hospitality and the delicious local fruits.

We would have given this place a higher rating but for an issue with wood smoke. First, the good. The home is a wonderful setting, surrounded by tropical forest, quiet, peaceful, minutes drive from town of Volcano and the park. It is spacious inside, great lanai for hanging outdoors, fully equipped kitchen, comfortable beds, good showers, and great to see use of solar power. Nice touches like fresh fruit and flowers. Now, the less good. When we arrived, the place smelled heavily of wood smoke, likely from prior guest use of fire place. This poor indoor air quality made my wife's asthma flare. We opened all doors/windows and ran fans to ventilate and while this reduced smoke smell some, it did not resolve the issue. The manager did not offer a solution but did offer us a refund if we wanted to leave (did not, as nearby accommodations not available). Maybe providing a HEPA air filter unit (e.g. BlueAir) would help. Because of this wood smoke issue, we cannot recommend place to anyone with asthma or other sensitivities to poor indoor air quality. Otherwise, it is a great place.

Peggy has gone above and beyond to make things comfortable and easy at her home. From her consistent communication before and during our stay, to the amount of kitchen products (oil, sugar, salt pepper, spices) to the amount of towels, she literally has thought of everything. For the first time ever staying in a rental, we didn’t need all of the items we brought for our stay, we just needed groceries. Her rental feels like home and we couldn’t have been more happy or comfortable. Our kids say they miss the house like it’s a family member. We all really connected with the home and the beauty of the entire property it was so peaceful and quiet, with the only sounds outside coming from the birds and pleasant sound of occasional rain. If you stay, please say hi to the North Cardinal we named “Big Red” that visited the bird feeder all through out the day.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is beautifully decorated and Peggy has gone to great lengths to make it comfortable for guests. (The flowers were magnificent.) We were there for just two nights and, unfortunately, had a lot of rain over that period, so we did not have the opportunity to enjoy the deck, which clearly would have been a lovely place to spend some time. Communication was immediate. We all would highly recommend Peggy's place.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pele’s Secret Garden! What a unique and beautiful property! It is nestled in the rainforest with tropical plants and birds everywhere. The furnishings were beautiful, especially the tiled fireplace. We loved that the owner provided fresh tropical fruits and fresh flowers in vases. Kitchen was very well equipped. Beds were extremely comfortable. The two full bathrooms were great for two couples, and the showers were fantastic. We also appreciated that the owner was environmentally conscious. Very close to Volcanoes National Park. Definitely exceeded our expectations! Highly recommend!

From the moment we arrived at the property, we felt cocooned in a welcoming warmth that lasted the duration of our stay. Home is located within a few minutes of the entrance to Volcanoes Nat'l Park, perfect for our visit. Sleeping arrangements were ideal with Queen in master, and double singles in second bedroom. Lots of condiments and spices for the chef and the host left canned drinks for us in the fridge as well. Home is surrounded by tropical forest with sliding glass doors around its entire inside, simply beautiful. Comfy sectional in family room with games and TV/videos if you're bored. Lovely decor as well. Thank you so much for allowing us to stay in this amazingly beautiful sanctuary!

Getting right to the point...IT WAS AWESOME! The pictures and reviews were great, but the real thing exceeded our expectations. Peggy's home was not only beautiful but also had everything we needed to feel like it was our own home! From the fresh flowers (from the yard), the pineapple, coffee and other goodies waiting for us, to the fireplace ready to go with wood in it, we really felt like we were in paradise!! The only thing we didn't like was that we had to leave. But... we WILL be back. Mahalo, Peggy!

Awesome stay near the Hawaii volcano national park! The home itself is gorgeous, beautifully designed, and only a few minutes drive away from the park entrance and from the town of Volcano. We enjoyed breakfast on the lanai listening to the animals in the rainforest and to the dripping of rainfall. The hammock was a wonderful addition. The home is immaculately maintained and fully stocked (better than my own kitchen). The info binder was very helpful in getting acquainted with the area and restaurant/food options that were available. All the listed restaurants had great food. And we really enjoyed the jacuzzi tub. It was a really special place and memorable 5 star experience. Would definitely stay again.
