Property Overview
Winter Months:
January and February are the best times to see whales in the bay by the house. 2023 has been great, there have been many sightings of spouts (many are moms with their calf), tails and breaching. No specific time of day is best, so when you have the opportunity to relax, grab a chair and go to the cliffs to watch. The weather is cooler especially at night, this is time when you will see snow atop Mauna Kea and Loa.
Spring Months:
March to June the orchids are in full bloom all over the yard. Weather is warming a bit, but it still can be cool at night.. Lots of different fruit are available during the spring.
Summer Months:
June to September the pineapples become ripe to eat.
The summer of 2024 will have a large number of pineapples becoming ripe, we presently have 20 baby pineapples which will be ready to pick this summer. Summer is our hottest time at night due to the longer and dryer days (lots of floor and ceilings, NO AC).
Fall months:
The macadamia nuts are harvested in the Fall. The humpback whales typically return to the island in November. As typical for fall, with the shorter days the evenings start to become cooler.
If internet abilities is important to you we have Spectrum with 71.7 Mbps for downloading and 11.1 Mbps for uploading. Recently had a family of 5 staying and all used the internet for work and school and they said it worked perfectly. At one point 3 people were zooming at the same time.
The Area
Melemele house is located in the quiet residential community at Kaloli Point. Kaloli Point is considered the jewel of Hawaiian Paradise Park (HPP) which is in the quite community of Kea'au (which is 28 miles south of Hilo), with its quiet community of mainly long-term residents, its wonderful flow of trade winds, closeness to the ocean and its relatively flat terrain. Kaloli Point is also in a rain shadow, it could be raining more inland but not on Kaloli point. You will enjoy easy and safe sunset walks along the coastal waters, peaceful evening meals on your screened lanai and the sounds of the ocean nearby.
The location of melemele house puts you close to the town of Hilo, with regular farmer’s markets, fine dining and retail shops, as well as the small towns of Kea’au and Pahoa, with their unique local communities and histories (as well as a shopping center with a market). The home is ideally situated with short drives leading to lazy beach days with the kids near Hilo, to incredible snorkeling at Carlsmith and Richardson Beach parks. Since the recent lava flow in the summer of 2018 there are several new black sand beaches that easy to get to where once Pohiki Boat ramp once was open ocean (see photo).
Hawaii Volcano National Park, which is only 20 miles away. See the new crater, it is significantly bigger than the previous crater. New trails are open that offer a great opportunity to see the tropical sea birds that nest in the crater (see photo). This is a fantastic opportunity to see how much the crater has changed since the many thousands of earth quakes hit the region in the summer of 2018.
The House
Melemele house is close enough to the coastal waters (with a 2-3 min walk to a waterfront park) that the surf can be heard while you relax or eat your meals on the large screened lanai. This “classic” Hawai’ian style 2 story home, with vaulted ceilings, an open floor plan and windows strategically placed to allow the trade winds to flow through the house will give you the full aloha experience. The kitchen, dining area and living room are located in the vaulted roof area with each room having its own ceiling fan to keep them cool.
The living area has a 50” smart HDTV with a DVD player and cable TV for your entertainment needs and movie nights. And the Wi-Fi throughout the house will keep you connected. The dining nook has a 4-person table (in addition to the table on the master lanai). The kitchen is fully equipped with all the amenities needed to enjoy those Hawai’ian meals. The house has 3 bedrooms (each with a unique ceiling fan) and 2.5 bathrooms. In addition to the living areas, the top floor also has the master bedroom and a guest, half bath. The master bedroom offers the luxury of a California king bed and an en suite bathroom, large walk in closet and private lanai that lets you cozy up with a coffee/tea and a good book. Downstairs you will find the other two bedrooms, each with queen size beds, and closet space. These bedrooms share a full size bath. Downstairs you will also find a fully equipped laundry room (washer and dryer), a utility sink and a linen closet with ample beach towels and blankets for all your beach going needs and additional equipment such as snorkels, goggles, fins and a body board stored in the laundry room. There are also 3 bicycles available to ride around the area. Recently, solar panels were installed to make the house more sustainable and allow guest to leave fans on when you leave for the day.
We recently installed solar panels, so the house runs on solar power, but don't worry if its a very cloudy day we have back up to the electric company so you will always have power.
The Property
Melemele house is located on a half-acre lot with a lot of privacy and a large paved driveway to meet all your parking needs. As is common in this residential area you will find plenty of flora in the front and back garden. The home has fruit trees including: coconut, orange, lemon, star fruit, macadamia nut, tangerine, and avocado, as well as pineapple plants. We recently planted a couple of Brazilian cherry bushes, these aren't your typical cherry, but they are extremely tasty. There is also a large assortment of flowers, including the pride of Hawai’i the Ohia trees with Lehua flowers. Don’t be surprised if you identify even more as you explore the neighborhood. In addition to admiring the flora, prepare to do some whale watching during the day (seasonal Nov-March) and star-gazing at night. Whales have been observed off Kaloli Point, with humpbacks in the bay during whale season, and the distance from city centers make Kaloli Point ideal for star-gazing on a clear night.

Loved the space, location, and the lanai. The house provided supplies for fun beach days.
Comfortable house with all of the amenities. Quiet location, short walk to the ocean views. Host was kind and reaponsive. Check in was easy!
The host was thoughtful and generous with fresh fruit waiting on the table. Beds were comfortable, large lanai was very pleasant.
Properly was clean upon arrival. Fresh fruit basket and welcome card. Host is very responsive to questions Info book was very helpful. Loved the enclosed upper patio
It was very comfortable, updated, friendly. We felt welcomed with the basket of fruit. Everything we needed to cook with or go to the beach with was provided. We love Melemele House
So peaceful. While we wanted to be near some attractions near Hilo, we did not want to stay near a lot of people. We knew of this little community in Keaau and this property did not disappoint! While we were initially nervous about the lack of AC (for medical reasons I typically need it), we ended up having excellent sleep at this home and there were many ceiling fans that helped. The screened in porch was a huge favorite along with the charming garden and exotic fruit trees in the backyard. It could not have been a more peaceful and welcoming home! Would stay again!!
The property was well-maintained, clean, and pleasant. There were plenty of adventure-oriented towels, hats, boogie boards, and every other beach or touring device you might think of. There was also lots of literature about the island and its destinations. All of the sleeping accommodations were comfortable.
We enjoyed our stay here. It was a great home base for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and other sights on the Big Island. The kitchen is well stocked and the beds are comfy. We walked to the ocean in the morning for great views of the coast and spent a lot of time on the screened porch enjoying the trees and flowers in the yard. They even grow their own pineapples! Craig and Patti are great hosts. Patti notified us about the Kilauea eruption. Unfortunately we missed the show because we were already on the way to Kona to catch our flight.
Nice to have three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. Screened lanai was very nice. Was a little too far from town, groceries, and activities for us. To be fair, the listing says no AC, but we really wish the home had air conditioning as it is very hot and humid here. This is not a cool oasis at the end of a hot Hawai’i day of fun. You will have to take all of your own trash to a transfer station, so if your rental car is already tight with people and luggage, plan ahead. Home well equipped with pots, pans, spices, pancake syrups, camp chairs, some snorkel gear, beach towels. Owner responds best to phone calls; they came by within an hour when there was a problem with the power system. Be ready to listen to loud frogs all night and roosters early in the morning. You hear everything because you must sleep with windows and doors open.
We absolutely loved this place! The house had so much to offer and plenty of space for all of us! We loved everything! The beds were very comfortable, loved the views from the balconies, the cookware was perfect for us to make meals while we were there, the instructions were very easy to follow and understand, the host was amazing and kept us informed about the volcano that was going to erupt while we were there… We really loved everything about this place. We highly recommend this property and look forward to coming back again soon!
Location was wonderful, neighbors quiet, house lovey but warm, hosts were gracious and easily reached.
This beautifully decorated hale was clean & well-stocked. I loved the decor & the screened lanai. I enjoyed living like a local. Hilo was an easy drive even at night. And if you can, you must check out the sunrise at the nearby cliffs. Patti was a great, responsive host. I hope to stay here again on my next trip.A hui hou.
We stayed for 3 nights. It was a hope away from home. The kitchen es extremely well equipped with everything one would need. The garden is wonderful and the hosts were exceptionally helpful.
The property is beautiful. The house had everything we needed. even stuff to take to the beach; chairs, coolers, snorkel gear, and boogie boards which is really nice since its really hard to fly to the island with all those things. There were 6 of us staying and we had plenty of space for everybody. We did have a little bit of an issue with having enough hot water for everybody to shower, but it wasn't a huge deal. The fresh fruit Patti left for us was delicious! Also there is no air conditioning, but there are so many fans in the house, just keep the windows open and it is completely comfortable at night. We had a great time!
The house is good overall, the kitchen knives are scary dull. The rooms were clean and I felt like I was in my own home for the most part. The extra stuff the owners provide like the snorkling gear and chairs were an expense I didn't have to worry about. I've never been to Hawaii so there was some things I wasn't used to like the humidity eating everything including corroding the door locks overnight. One issue that came from that was the unscheduled visit from the owners. I had messaged them the lock was sticky to the front door but we're fine using the side door but they just came over during dinner time. I have never had the owner just show up using the other rental service and it just felt unusual for this to happen
We felt so much at home that we forgot that we had to leave. Never have i felt so stress free that i lost track of the days & time. Woke up this morning & realized that my trip to heaven on earth was over.
We had everything we needed for a wonderful 3-night stay. Great space for the 6 of us. Would definitely stay again!
We stayed here for 4 nights and really enjoyed our experience. Lots of space in the house and a beautiful lanai!
We had a wonderful experience at Melemele house. The house was tidy, clean and well-appointed. The fresh fruit left by the owner was delicious and a big bonus. Also, appreciated the hand-written note welcoming us to the home.We found the location to be convenient to visit Volcanoes National Park, Hilo, and otherLocal attractions.Overall, a great experience! attractions.
A beautiful well-maintained home in a wonderful location, with a thoughtful, attentive host! Master suite upstairs was luxurious with private lanai; 2 more bedrooms (with comfortable queen beds) and a bathroom downstairs were small but adequate, compensated for by large kitchen, fully-screened lanai and living room common areas upstairs. Lovely ocean-front park a short walk away, bikes to borrow among other amenities. One of the best places we've stayed in HPP. We are two over-60 couples who hope to return again someday (but we will switch who gets the master suite!)! Aloha and mahalo, Patricia!
Great the fruit trees in the backyard was a nice touch.
We had great communication with owners before we arrived. Directions they sent us were perfect and the info book in the house just added to more information. The house was as advertised and we really enjoyed relaxing and recharging at this house. From seeing an active volcano to whale and turtle watching, Hilo area has it all. We will definitely stay here again if our travels send us this way. The extra fruit basket upon arrival just made the stay perfect.
Cozy home, very comfortable! Quiet setting, except for the frogs, which we loved listening to. Would gladly come again
Property is easy walk to the shoreline yard has a fruit trees and is beautiful. Lots of room - wonderful eating porch and overall wonderful place
Great experience! The house was spacious, well-equipped and clean. The location is great since it is in a more quiet part of the development and within walking distance of the cliffs by the sea.The hosts were prompt with communications and helpful for when I had questions. Some things to note to ensure a good fit if looking to book this property:1) This property is set back in the Hawaiian Paradise Park development, which is a good thing. It is closer to the ocean (2 blocks) and gets some of the ocean breeze.2) Hawaiian Paradise Park is located in the "rainier" section of Big Island but the rain seldom lasts long on most days, usually only falling overnight. If looking at forecasts for the area, make sure to look at the hour-by-hour forecast so you can see if the rain is expected all day. 3) There are coqui frogs and chickens in the area. I find the sound of the frogs to be soothing and do not mind the roosters too much since my family had chickens when I was growing up. If you are really sensitive to the noise of roosters, this could be something to consider.4) Many of the houses I have been in within Hawaiian Paradise Park do not have air conditioning. This house is no exception but they have ceiling fans in each room and vented windows to allow for better flow of the ocean breezes. This suited our needs just fine but may be something that other people may not find fits their needs. I do not feel that the house ever got too hot.
The House was as stated in the description. However it didn't elaborate on the great Lanai Which was awesome, we spent alot of time out there listening to birds and the Roosters. The yard was beautiful and the fresh oranges and starfruit were great. Patti and Craig were easy to work with and stopped by to say hi, so was great to put a face to them. The beds were very comfortable and was great to have the washer and dryer. the grand kids with us age ranged from 4-15 and they made use of the water toys that were at the house and netflix !!! Again the house had everything we needed and then some..... Would highly recommend to all travelers. Maholo for everything Tammy &Bruce
The house was welcoming with lights on ready for our arrival. A friut basket on the table full of Hawaiian fruit was most welcoming and very appriciated. The home came with everything a family would ned to enjoy beach oitings, chance of rain and plenty of beach towels. We enjoyed listening to the frogs at night but not the roosters on the morning , although they were a little annoying it was not to bad. The yard is beautiful with lots of fruit growing on the trees and a pleasent view to enjoy with a cup of coffee. Thanks again forcthe great experience.
This location is off the beaten path. The ocean is close by and beautiful. It's not a beach; it’s a rocky volcanic cliff. Gorgeous, however, not for small children. We enjoyed walks, bike rides, and the beautiful greenery in the yard. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook with—a large fridge and freezer. There were chairs and beach towels to use. There is no A/C; however, ceiling fans and portable fans are available. We enjoyed our stay. Thank you!
Was everything we needed and more Bikes, coolers, lots of towels. Was perfect !
This was a great place to stay
The house had everything you need, it makes you feel at home. The owners took the time to make a welcome note and left a basket of fresh fruit. My parents, my husband and my children were there. The simple fact that they had a bath chair is something special to me for older people, we don't need it because we were prepared, but the fact that they thought about those details for their house seemed very good to me. We were able to used the beach chairs and equipment. This house is in my next year vacation list. Thank you for everything.
Our hosts, Patti and Craig made everything go so smoothly for our stay and they thought of everything to make their guests feel at home. The house was as beautiful as the pictures! We loved the sounds from the wildlife in the yard and enjoyed watching the dogs play in the neighboring yard. The fruit and coffee basket was such a welcome surprise!
The house is large with lots of amenities. Located in a very quiet neighborhood far from downtown Hilo. If you want a quiet place far away from everything, this is your paradise. The is no ac which in July was a bit on the warm side even with the windows open and fans on.
Awesome
I really liked this house. Big enough for everyone to have their own space. Cute fruit welcome basket. The house definitely needs a good deep clean. 30 min out of Hilo. Have to take your own trash to the transfer station. Which is not ideal when your rental car is filled with all your stuff when your leaving. Easy instructions to follow when arriving. Lots of fans to try and cool off the house. Big back yard but no games outside. Bbq is a little old and very dirty. There were a lot of used condiments in the fridge but some were outdated and moldy. Beds and pillows need to be replaced. Quiet neighborhood. Lots of extras to use for beach and board games. Overall good place.
We loved our time at Melemele House. The welcome basket and hand written note, as well as the very prompt and informative communications from the host, made the place feel welcoming from the start. The setting is lovely, with a big yard, fruit trees, baby pineapples growing, and a very short walk to a lava cliff with beautiful views. The neighborhood is idyllic, with chickens and other animals and hardly any road traffic. Lots of games, movies, a wonderful screened in porch, and all the supplies we needed for the beach as well as cooking. Super helpful and responsive hosts! Only wish we could’ve stayed longer! Oh and the listing notes a hot tub but there isn’t one. Bikes, yes!
Everything was as expected and communication was great. We didn’t spend a whole lot of time at the house as we were out exploring the island all day, every day. The kids had a great time chasing lizards around the yard when we were at the house, and our hosts left us an amazing gift basket of local fruit. Perfect stay for us.
We loved our stay at the Melemele House. Our hosts, Patti and Craig, welcomed us with information about places to visit, a lovely fruit basket and local coffee. The house was very comfy and breezy, with a balcony off the master bedroom, where you could watch the many birds flying among the trees in the backyard and go to sleep with the singing of the coqui (little frogs). The house worked well for our extended family of seven. The kitchen was well equipped and there was lots of equipment for fun in the water and at the beach. Even bicycles for tootling around country roads. The house was clean and artfully decorated. Being in the country, you do get little bugs that make their way indoors. Patti promptly responded to our questions and she and Craig were very accomodating. We would definitely stay there again if we have the chance, Lynette and Sunny
We had a great time staying at Melemele House. The location is private and beautiful. Grounds of the property are lush with a pineapple garden and beautiful tropical flowers. We had everything we needed; a well-stocked kitchen, plenty of space to enjoy the evenings, good sleeping arrangements and all the recreational equipment so you don't have to go looking to rent it. We had morning coffee and evening wine on the small balcony off the master bedroom. Lovely to watch the sun rise or set. And there are beautiful walks along the coast just minutes from the house. The frog noises are intense and take some getting used to but did not pose a problem for us. The house got toasty a few times despite the many fans in all living areas--part of the tropical experience. Patti and Craig are terrific hosts. Communications were easy throughout the whole process. And they went the extra mile to help us with some computer connectivity problems (problem on our end). Also really enjoyed the fresh fruit basket. Couldn't be more please with our whole adventure. Thanks Craig and Patti.
We enjoyed our time here very much. The home was very clean and had lots of space for our family of five. The weather definitely causes wear and tear on the houses here. The location is a bit out of the way and we often ran into traffic on our way to and from the home. The neighbors have dogs that were sometimes noisy. We did enjoy the yard and being able to walk to the coast and even hear the waves at night. The house had everything we needed to cook and use the kitchen as well as beach supplies (chairs, towels, boogie boards). Patricia was great to work with and we appreciated the fruit basket that was provided.
Thank you so much to Patti and Craig for letting us stay in their beautiful home in HPP. From the moment we pulled into the driveway we felt like we were home. Patti left the most beautiful fruit basket and card on the dining room table for us. The house was comfy and cozy and filled with items to help us further enjoy our stay including board games, magazines, beach chairs and more! The backyard is absolutely stunning with fruit trees and tropical plants. My favorite area of the home is the screened in lanai with a table for eating dinner and the comfiest couch for reading and taking naps surrounded by the sounds of nature. We also enjoyed walks down to the cliffs to watch the waves crash against the rocks. We are moving to HPP and Patti and Craig were kind enough to sit down with my husband, children and I to chat about life in Hawaii. Mahalo for sharing your beautiful home and aloha spirit with us.
This lovely home in the country is just minutes from the ocean and town. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the lovely surroundings.
We loved everything about this house and the property. The backyard has so many trees and these cute little pineapples. The house has a lanai that is screened in so it was so nice to eat breakfast and read without having bugs bug you. The house was clean with plenty of towels and other amenities. We loved the thoughtfulness of the hosts for the fresh fruit and handwritten card. Just a wonderful place to stay! Thank you!
There is an amazing feeling you get when you walk into a place you are staying for vacation and realize it is a total score. This was our experience. I like when a place is unique, embodies the essence of the area you are visiting, and has all the things you think you might need and more. The welcome note and fruit basket provided upon arrival were wonderful and the back yard filled with beautiful tropical trees and wildlife. My favorite part though was the lanai. What a magical place to sit, relax, and listen to the birds and frogs. The short walk to the cliffs in the evenings to watch the waves crash against the rock walls was also a treat. I love that it was outside of town and felt more secluded. This is a fabulous place and highly recomended.
The house was perfect for our family of 5. Quiet neighborhood where you could walk to the ocean. Plenty of space and had everything we needed. Really enjoyed our stay!
Well appointed home and lovely welcome gift. We loved the screened in porch and refreshing breeze. It took a while to get used to the roosters, bird sounds and dogs barking, but in the end it was all part of the experience! We found the location worked well for exploring the Hilo side of the island.
While we were out and about everyday, this house had everything you could need. Our family of 6 had more than enough space and even a wonderful bucket of extra stuff down stairs to make life easier. The owner really puts in the effort to make you feel welcome and enjoy your time.
My family of 5 stayed here for 5 days before going to a different island. Home had everything we needed for a comfy stay!
Clean, well stocked, plenty of space to spread out, nice neighborhood. Would stay there again.
This house was amazing. We had 8 adults in our group and we fit just fine. The house was clean and really well appointed. It had absolutely everything we needed. We started and ended each day on the huge lanai. It was so nice to sit out there and take in the beautiful grounds, but even better was just listening to the sounds of the outdoors...the birds, frogs and even the roosters were delightful to hear. The house is a short walk from a secluded cliff park where we enjoyed a beautiful show from whales who were breaching and slapping their tails on the water not once, not twice, but over and over. I texted Patti, the home owner to see if they had any binoculars at Melemele House that we could go back and get. They didn't, but not long afterward here she and Craig come with their personal pair so we could better watch the show. They were incredible hosts who just want to share their beautiful home and lovely island with those who come. We couldn't have had a better experience. Thank you Patti and Craig for the use of Melemele House, the lovely fruit basket and card that greeted us, and your incredible hospitality. If we are ever lucky enough to return, we will stay with you again. Mahalo.
We stayed 3 nights and we were very happy with the house! It was a quiet home base after busy days exploring the island. The kitchen had plenty of cooking tools and spices for us to make breakfast and dinner. The lanai was a wonderful place to relax and listen to the sounds of nature---frogs, the distant crashing of waves, and the chickens. We loved our short morning walks to the ocean to drink our coffee and watch the waves. It was nice the owners provided coolers, beach chairs, towels, and snorkel gear! The neighbor dogs did bark on occasion, but mainly just when we were arriving at the house. It wasn't constant. The welcoming fruit basket and personalized note was a lovely gift upon arrival!
Large home, perfect for four adults. We spent time exploring Volcanoes NP, the coastline, lava flows, tsunami museum and Hilo. A great central location for all activities. Well equipped kitchen with condiments in fridge. Our hosts left fresh fruit and a welcome note which we appreciated. Beds were moderately comfortable, lower level a bit damp. Lots of fans provided but no AC. Floor was slippery when we arrived..maybe it was the cleaning solution. Screened in porch, beach towels & chairs were wonderful. Mahalo!
Stayed here as a base to see the east side of the island. It was nice they had beach towels, chairs. We could use snorkeling stuff. They also had bicycles.
The home was amazing! We had everything we needed! The fruit that was there for us was some of the best fruit I have ever had! The location seems far away from town but it really isn’t! I would stay here again. Loved taking a bike ride to the coast! We actually saw some whales!
This is our 2nd year staying here and we loved it just as much the 2nd time around. We have family in the area so it was a great home base to have them come visit (their house is tiny). Would stay again in a heartbeat.
If you're seeking a laid-back retreat in Hilo, this home should be on your shortlist. It offers three bedrooms, conveniently located just a 5-minute walk from the ocean and peacefully situated away from major streets (4 miles). Hilo is easily accessible with a 30-minute drive. The kitchen is well-equipped with essentials, up to a coffee grinder and champagne glasses. The laundry room features an extra-large capacity washer and dryer, and it was stocked with a Costco-size liquid detergent. Towels and beach gear/equipment are plentiful for a comfortable stay. A heads-up: the bathrooms don't provide shower gel, so bringing your own is advisable. Additionally, there's an opportunity to enjoy seasonal fruits like bananas, coconuts, starfruits, and pineapples from the garden. One of the notable features of this house is the spacious veranda on the second floor, shielded by anti-mosquito screens. I loved spending evenings immersed in the sounds of Coqui frogs, and being waked up by neighboring roosters. The surroundings gives you a mix of nature and village vibes, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Just enjoy your time here!
