For the traveller seeking a more authentic experience of Hawai`i is Hale Makani Kai, "home of the gentle ocean breeze." Ideally located for experiencing the unique beauty and culture of true Hawai`i, this home is found on the "beautiful side of the island” where the lush green mountains meet the crystal blue Pacific Ocean. This beautiful country environment is reflected in the owner/manager Lance Fairly's paintings. You can see some of his artwork at (www.lancefairly.com)
This comfortable upstairs rural home offers you the simplicity of island living without sacrificing modern convenience. After a swim in the ocean, relax on your deck where you can watch honu (sea turtles) taking a break at the surface, something you won't find on more crowded sides of the island! If you're lucky, you'll even get a chance to catch whales breaching out beyond the reef at the right time of year. Become entranced while watching the coconut trees swaying in the ocean breeze, perfectly framing your view of the ocean from the deck or living room - like something out of a postcard! Behind you, the Ko’olau mountain range rises into the sky, covered in a lush, green junglescape, where wild boar, peacocks, and birds live freely and mountain streams run untouched. The tranquil setting of this gem of a home truly removes you from the outside world, giving your spirit a place of solace to reconnect and be renewed.
When you’ve rejuvenated and are ready to venture out, you’ll find no shortage of unique local places to eat, uncrowded beaches to visit, and island shopping to explore. Two of the top ten world famous places to visit on O'ahu, The Polynesian Cultural Center (www.polynesia.com) and Kualoa Ranch (www.kualoa.com) are just minutes away. Lifetime memories are waiting to be made at these two truly unforgettable attractions, amongst others, just down the road from the home.
When you stay with us, not only do you get a more local experience, but you also are supporting local. We are kama’āina - a local family dedicated to caring for and sharing this special place we call home. We are honored to be able to introduce you to our unique island culture and lifestyle. Most of all, we are committed to sharing the true meaning of ALOHA with you, so that your Hawaii experience will be an unforgettable one for you and your `ohana (family). We've raised our family in this home, and while our children are now grown and on other parts of the island, this home has remained in the family, and we are honored to share its specialness with visitors in hopes that they will be able to experience an authentic piece of this truly unforgettable place. We look forward to welcoming you!

Great place and great owner.
Location is outstanding. In my opinion this is one of the most beautiful parts of the island and on top of that it’s located very well to access both the north shore and Honolulu. This is an apartment over an art gallery. While it is ocean front there’s not much in the way of a beach at least while we were there. There are 4 bedrooms in all, one is not furnished which was fine for my family as we used it for a staging area for luggage and clothes.
This is exactly as described. One bathroom is a little smaller than pictured. Beach out front was amazing...swimming with sea turtles, sunrises and sunsets were spectacular, the sound of the waves with that ocean breeze. Straight up paradise and Lance and his wife were very helpful with any question or information. Definitely will be back....
We had a wonderful time. The beauty of the ocean is so relaxing and peaceful. We were on the go constantly and it was great to get out on the lanai at the end of the day. The art work in the home is absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful view from the living room and upper deck. Well stocked house. We enjoyed grilling oceanside and eating on the deck. Low tide allowed easy beach access for our morning beach walks.
If you want beautiful views, this is the place. Plenty of parking. Nice big lot. Large rooms. Large bathroom on upper floor. Only downside was the clothes washer was not working for all 3 days. New one was on order.
This place has an amazing view!! Great location, surrounded by beautiful beaches!! Wonderful memories to be made! Sunrises are memorizing!
Wonderful property with amazing views and a history that made it feel like home. I must have missed the note that stated there was another rental space below but in hindsight I’m glad I did because the property was perfect for what we had planned. The hosts were kind, generous, and welcoming!!
Loved everything about this house. Very clean. A little dated, but absolutely perfect. Can't wait to go back.
We loved this place because the sunrise from the deck is something to behold. Would definitely recommend and stay there again.
Lance was great very responsive very helpful. All the questions we had. He was quick to respond. He even came over and introduced himself. We are there for 25th anniversary. We had a fantastic time.
Ocean Frontrow, good for 4 adults or small families.
We enjoyed our stay. The house was very comfortable for our group and had everything we needed. We loved the location. It’s close to stores and activities. The home is a little dated but was very clean. The beds were comfortable. The main drawback is the busy road but we dealt with it. 2 things which I don’t think is clear - 1) it is upstairs. Which was ok for us but could be an issue for others. 2) it is not on a beach. It’s on the water. The ocean comes right up to the downstairs front yard - but you have a short walk to the sandy beach. Thank you for a nice stay.
This home was perfect for the 3 of us. The view was amazing. The home was incredibly clean. And Lance made everything so easy and was very responsive.
This property has stunning views facing east for gorgeous sunrises from a large deck. The ocean sounds are just right for sleeping (the breakwater is a few hundred yards off shore so not too loud). There is some road noise but we got used to it in a day or two.
Lance was great and very communicative. The house was clean, and well appreciated. 3 couples and plenty is space. Beautiful view, right on the water. Would stay again.
We loved staying on this relaxed side of the island. The beach house was nothing too fancy but well equipped and comfortable. Just what we needed.
Very comfortable for my family of 5
The view from the deck makes this place! Great spot to stay away from the crowds of Honolulu, easy access to beautiful beaches and North Shore. We saw turtles every morning right off the property and even saw a few whale spouts near the horizon. Would definitely recommend if you’re not into the city and resort crowds.
We really enjoyed the location and the host was friendly and easy to communicate with although we didn’t need to. We had a great stay
The place was clean, not fancy but it had everything we needed. The view was amazing!
The view from the deck is incredible and makes the place.
There is no mincing words, this was exactly what you want and exactly what you get. a pleasant, simple rural home with a wonderful ocean view. Everything you'll need is in the kitchen. Lance did a great job helping us with any questions and gave us good advice for any spots we wanted to visit.
The place was clean roomy for 6 adults. Everything went perfectly smooth from check in to check out. Thanks to Lance for fast response and helping us out without stepping into our privacy during our stay. I hope others who stay here will get a chance to check out his art works and art studio downstairs which we were lucky to. House is right by the ocean and as well as the road you will hear some noise during day but nothing to complain about. My parents’ best memories are here sitting at the patio looking at the beach getting ocean breeze finding turtle visits usually in the mornings. Definitely will come back.
Can’t beat the view. No need for ac in the main room. But ac did help with the sleeping in all 3 bedrooms. Lance was very nice and helpful. From his work you can see he is a talented artist. Like almost every house on the coast you will hear traffic. I would definitely stay here agsin.
Beds were comfortable, living area was adequate, view was pretty, snorkeling right off the property was nice. Apartment could use an update but served our needs. One beach chair was available, few more would have been nice.
Loved having coffee on the deck for sunrise, loved experiencing my first over-ocean moonrise! We had such a great time - the Ocean breeze was wonderful and the location to North Shore activities was great.
ocean view was beautiful
Everything was super clean and the check in was so easy! The view was wonderful with sea turtles swimming by. The beach house is dated, but every room displays incredible art. There is road noise from the busy highway, and the AC is loud too. Still, it is a convenient location for exploring the North Shore.
Stayed here for a few days in early September, and it was a great place to stay to explore the north and northwest sides of the island. Convenient to several beaches, and the northwest beaches (like Sunset beach) are only about 20-25 minutes away. The house had a great deck for watching the sunrise and sitting out at night. There is a small beach area right off the back, but we were too busy going to other beaches to explore the reef right there, though we did see turtles from the deck. And having the ability to do laundry in the unit was a nice plus at the tail end of our trip. Lance was a great host and responded quickly to any issues we had. He has an art studio below the unit so was usually not too far away if we needed anything. The place is right on the main road that goes around the north side of the island, so you do have some road noise, especially in the back rooms. So that is just something to be aware of. Parking can be a bit tight, too. Fine for one car, but more than that might be a tight squeeze. Overall a great place that allows you to relax at the end of a day of exploring Oahu.
Our house was wonderful! The only issue we had was a few of the electrical outlets did not work. The house was in a great location, and kept very clean
This was a great place for our family of 6 to stay. We were hoping to go out on the beach behind the house but the tide was too high. (this of course out of control of owners) The road is noisy, so bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. Other than that is was perfect! We really were only there to sleep and shower because we were all over the island. It seemed to be about an hour drive regardless the direction but that was expected. The place is surrounded by great places to eat. Lance and his wife stopped by just to make sure everything was ok and if we needed anything which was very nice. Over all a great place to sleep, shower, and plan for your next daily adventure!
We really enjoyed our time at this rental. The views from the lanai were incredible! We spent a lot of time during our 3 days on the lanai, and at the shoreline. It was awesome watching crabs and other sea life on the rock wall. The AC in the rooms worked well and quickly cooled the rooms down at night. There is no AC in the living room where my youngest slept though (and I overlooked that in the description) but that is my bad. The only negative we had was the road traffic beginning at 4-5 in the morning. If you have light sleepers (like my dad) it could be an issue-even with the AC going. For a 35 MPH road, some people fly down it and if it is a big truck the noise is really loud. One such big truck woke nearly everyone up one morning. I'd recommend a white noise maker or ear plugs if a light sleeper, but it wouldn't prevent me from coming back because of that view! Thank you!
Fantastic views from the deck and living room. Great property layout and snorkeling in front of the unit. The one bathroom was a tad small but we managed. Good times were had by all.
Our family stayed here for 5 days and loved it- perfect for us and our 2 college age daughters. Very clean and had everything we needed. Lance was very helpful and responsive when we had any questions. We would definitely stay here again! Liz and Doug , WI
Lance is a wonderful host. He was very accessible and accommodating when our flight was extremely late. We loved the small town of Hauula and wide assortment of food trucks. I experienced one of the best dives I've been on in recent memory-- the ship wreck dive: Sea Tiger. Got to see moray eels, Scorpian fish, octopai, sea turtle, a white tip shark, as well as swim inside the wreck! Simply amazing! Thanks again Lance for a wonderful time and for letting us stay at your simple but lovely abode!
This property was perfect for our first visit to the beautiful island of Oahu. Check-in was a breeze and the owner Lance was even there to give us a quick tour. The house had everything we needed for our family vacation. Drinking our coffee on the deck outside and watching the sun rise gave us that ultimate vacation feeling. We also loved walking the beach in the morning and even saw a few turtles. Beds were all very comfy and it worked really well for us that we could do laundry in the house. Lance was very easy to reach and helped us with all our questions. Also, he is a very talented artist (his art is featured throughout the house) and we were very lucky we were able to buy a piece of art from his studio that is located below the house. Would love to come back here someday!
This was a trip to remember. If you are looking to experience the true island this is your place. We seen the most amazing beaches, views and sea life. We got to swim and snorkel with turtles just steps from our door. Lance was full of information and even opened his art gallery for us to come see. He's a very talented artist. We would 100% come back and stay here.
We absolutely loved our stay. Lance's place is in a fantastic location and was the perfect place for our large family. The property is well maintained and comfortable. We loved being right on the ocean and the deck and yard were a great bonus. We would definitely stay again.
Lance is a wonderful host, so very helpful and easy to work with! This property has everything we needed for our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed Oahu and the surrounding area! Would definitely recommend!
The view was amazing!
This house was a nice getaway from the hustle and bustle of other parts of the island, but a 10-20 minute drive from a lot of great beaches, parks and places for activity or groceries and simple restaurants and food trucks. We thought there would be a little bit of beach between the house and the ocean but the back of the property leterally steps into the ocean for snorkling. Although that was unexpected it was pretty cool and the nearest beach was a 1 minute walk. A bit of maintenance could be done to a few windows, AC units worked but were pretty loud, but manaageable. The beds were comfortable, and amenities sufficient. Overall a great stay.
The house was everything we needed. Very clean and right on the water. Lance was wonderful and brought us sand chairs for the beach. Would definitely recommend this property!
My best friend and I always travel long places. She haf a timeshare down in Waikiki. I decided to book this property for the first leg so we could see all the more laid back, less tourist and more beachy areas. Lance communicated with us and anytime we needed anything he was a phone/text away. Beautiful view steps outsde of ocean. All the great beaches and Polynesian Center down the road. Highly recommend this property.
We truly enjoyed this property. The location and style fit us perfectly. The view from the deck is amazing and we saw many whales breeching in the ocean. Air conditioned bedrooms and washer and dryer were a blessing. Lance and his wife are wonderful hosts and replied quickly to any questions or concerns. Would highly suggest this rental to anyone. Great trip.
Great property for a small group of friends, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms along with full kitchen and comfortable living room. Some road noise at night, but not very noticeable during the day. Owner was extremely responsive to questions before and during stay.
The property is described accurately and is roomy for a family of 5 adults. The deck view is gorgeous and surrounding local beaches uncrowded. The drive into Waikiki is a good hour and can be a bit slow, but always nice to get back to quietness of Hauuala. Very reasonable golf course just 10 mins away on the ocean that kids enjoyed. Lance was very accommodating and communication was great. An observation, is a few more added simple comforts would make the stay more enjoyable. Deck chair padding covers, bedroom end table with lamp and newer refreshed beach towels. Overall we enjoyed our vacation and we found the this Simple Rural home comfortable and sufficient for our stay.
The house was very clean. Nothing fancy, but has everything needed for a very enjoyable stay. The views are amazing and great snorkeling right off the steps. Lance is a very helpful host.
The property is a well-located older property of wood construction. I could not locate smoke detectors in the property so i purchased one at a local hardware store and kept in the property for protection.
We enjoyed the property very much. It was as described with the exception of traffic noise. The owner came over and introduced himself and it turns out he's quite a famous painter which was an honor. His work is throughout the house and is beautiful. We saw a turtle in the ocean one day while standing in the yard. Overall we had a great experience.
This is by far one of our favorite homes. This was our second stay here and it was just as amazing as the first stay. Perfectly located for adventures on the beach and close to shopping, restaurants, and surfing. We love this house and we will return again.
Loved this quaint place.
