Elaine and Carter’s studio was perfect for my wife and I when visiting Volcanoes NP and Hilo. We spent I full day and 3 evenings in the National Park and 1 day exploring the beaches and waterfalls near Hilo. The studio was clean, well appointed and gated. Elaine and Carter were friendly and welcoming. We will definitely stay there again in our next visit!
Great location for our visit to Volcano National Park . It also worked out very well for our time we spent in the Hilo area. Very quiet and nice cabin. We would stay again if we come back in the future. I will be recommending this property to family and friends.
This property is a great place to sleep at night if you are visiting the volcano. Super close location to the volcano and the host are great at recommending places to go and explore! I was able to start hiking very early(like 5am early), worth it to see the stars and sunrise!! You are also in close range to many beaches in the area!

Elaine was always prompt with responding to our emails and was friendly and helpful when we arrived. The charming studio was decorated for Christmas and had everything we needed (but don't plan on preparing food--very limited kitchenette). Unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperative--raining, cool, very windy at Volcano, and we woke up to fog and drizzle in the morning--so we decided to stay only one night rather than the two that we had booked. The only negative is that the property is adjacent to the highway, and if you are a light sleeper, you will hear traffic noise during the night.
Upon our arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Elaine, setting a positive tone for the beginning of our stay. The location is perfect for exploring the park. We would definitely recommend other couples to stay here.
The hosts, Carter and Elaine, were very friendly. This place was as advertised and centrally located for the Volcano National Park along with day trips to Hilo and south of the island. Great stay!
We really enjoyed our stay at Carter & Elaine's Fern Studio. Carter welcomed us on arrival and was very helpful and friendly. The studio is a cozy place to stay for a couple nights if you are exploring the national park. We'd definitely stay here again!
We had a fabulous 2 night stay at the volcano studio. Cozy, very clean, really well laid out little studio with a super comfy bed. Elaine and Carter were great hosts, very welcoming and what a lovely touch to have a little bottle of bubbly in the fridge on arrival. We loved going up to see the volcano erupting at night (you can see so much more of the lava in the dark), walking the national park trails and driving to see the lava trees and Pohoiki black sand beach where the 2018 lava flow meets the sea. The studio is also a short drive to a variety of restaurants of which we enjoyed 2 meals out. Huge thank you to Elaine & Carter for having us at your lovely studio. We would highly recommend!
This was our first time renting a property instead of booking a hotel, and they were the most pleasant people to rent with. Elaine saw that we bought wine, but didn’t have glasses and brought us some nice crystal for the trip. They were cordial in asking if we needed laundry done, and places to visit on the island. We loved it here and definitely would come back.
