Summary
Wonderful clean 1BR house in a small old-hawaii-style duplex in Wailuku Town. Central Maui location in the heart of Wailuku Town where you can walk to an eclectic variety of shops.
Details
This cute plantation-era Wailuku Town house is absolutely perfect for adventurous visitors who are looking to escape the touristy trappings of South and West Maui. This is a safe, inexpensive and central home-base to adventure all over our wonderful island.
Although the unit is new to the market, the owners have been running two exceptional vacation rentals in West Maui for a few years now, and have received top ratings from their guests – this new unit promises the same!
This 1BR house has a queen bed and a/c in the bedroom, and a sofabed for extra guests in the living room. The living, dining and kitchen areas are an open and airy light-filled floorplan. Optimally located jalousie windows allow the sweet tropical tradewinds to blow though the home so you probably wont ever want to turn that a/c on anyway!
The owners are wonderful and also own and operate a business immediately adjacent to this house. While they are quite nonintrusive and respect their guests privacy, they are also very responsive and available should you need them.
Location
Located in the heart of old Wailuku Town, just ten minutes from the airport. This location is perfect for folks who plan on exploring all around Maui (something I suggest no matter where you stay!) It’s also worlds away in attitude and experience from the touristy hotels and resorts.
Wailuku is the capital town of Maui; completely non-touristy and down to earth. Compared to mainland cities, Wailuku is a sleepy laid-back small town, a throwback to much simpler times. In recent years Wailuku has seen a resurgence, with an eclectic array of hip shops and restaurants opening up alongside old-time Maui standards. You can walk all of Wailuku Town from this very central location.
Examples of what you might find strolling around the neighborhood: hip coffee shops, local clothing boutiques, hair salons, all different manner of inexpensive restaurants that aren’t on the tourists radar, antique stores, island-style pawn shops (with items like surfboards and Hawaiian antiques and jewelry you wont find in the resorts), a funky record store, yoga studios, the Maui Academy of Performing Arts, a smoke shop, historic Iao theater, a sushi bar, art galleries, a crystal shop, an authentic tiny New York style pizza joint – and so much more! Bonus: the first Friday of every month there is a block party where folks come from all over Maui to hang out, listen to live music, eat and browse the local vendors wares.
Moving outside the town, you’re also situated just a couple minutes before where the amazingly picturesque West Maui Mountains split to open into historic and sacred Iao Valley.
Iao Valley is just a few scenic minutes by car and has hiking trails (Kepaniwai Park just between here and Iao Valley is a great spot for a picnic.) The North Shore of West Maui starts close to here as well, with scenic vistas and less crowded hikes like the Waihe’e Ridge Trail. If you’re interested in learning more about Maui and Hawaiian history and culture, the Bailey House Museum is also close by and holds a large collection of photographs and Hawaiian artifacts that range from traditional stone tools to Duke Kahanamoku’s surfboard. (Bailey House is also a great place to score some unique gifts that are actually made in Maui.)
15 minutes in another direction takes you to the Maui Ocean Center and the Maalaea harbor for snorkel boats and whale watches. You’re also five miles from Maui Tropical Plantation and and you’re just 15-20 minutes from the resort areas of Kihei & Wailea. Half an hour will get you to West Maui’s Lahaina Town. You’re also closer to a Road to Hana adventure, and also to Haleakala than the resort areas are.
For wind and kite surfing, and downwind enthusiasts, Kanaha, Kite Beach and Kahului Harbor are just minutes away.
An incredible value for your travel dollar when you consider what resort lodging costs – and the unique value added experience and authenticity that comes alongside is invaluable.

I really wanted to love this property. First, if you are renting this place based on the online pictures you will be disappointed. I don’t know how old the pictures are but they don’t reflect the furniture in the house besides a couple of pieces. All of the furniture is deeply uncomfortable especially the bed. We had to buy a blow up mattress to sleep on because the mattress in the bedroom is awful and we would wake up in pain. Second, the property in general needs some love. A good paint job and a deep cleaning would go a long way. The shower head is the pits and does not match the pictures. The good stuff - the kitchen is well stocked with cooking supplies (not food), plenty of counter space, and is in a quiet neighborhood off the beaten path. The Main Street of town is 1 block away and the people and shops are lovely.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay. It was what we were looking for - a local house to stay in when visiting Maui. There were some slight bumps with check-in - we were having to talk with both the host (through the VRBO app) and another person (via cell phone number) who apparently is the owner of the property (?) still not sure. We were originally sent the wrong number of the person to talk to about the code for the front door. Eventually, we got things worked out, but this did not go as smoothly as planned.A note - like many local spots, this place has a single window AC unit in the bedroom. It runs effectively, but takes some time to cool down the bedroom. Otherwise, there are only fans in the rest of the house.
Sweet spot.
This is exactly as listed, a spacious, tall ceiling town house with charming yard, a roofed porch, spacious kitchen, fast internet and well stocked. We very much appreciated to be in a local neighborhood rather than the tourist mile :-) Mahalo for sharing your house with us!
We were in Maui to visit a friend who is suffering from Parkinson’s, to meet his local friends/support team and to celebrate his 72nd birthday. The house was a great location. The problem is that the bathroom room sink was broken for about half the time we were there.n
The neighborhood was a nice change from some of the more touristy areas of the island.
I was traveling for work and the house was convenient for my meetings and very spacious to work in and rest in. I found my stay lovely.
Overall, a very nice accomodation. Close to shops, swap meet, airport, restaurants, etc. Just a good location. Condo is clean and nice. Not in the condo much as we were out seeking adventure. I gave it a 4 out of 5 only because the couch is extremely uncomfortable. Please replace the couch. Mahalo.
The host were very generous with information and helping us. We had a terrific stay
Well cared for home and close to everything in old town!! We enjoyed a comfortable stay at this cozy home!
This property was fabulous. We were able to easily travel around the island from this cottage and spent many hours on the lanai enjoying the weather. The owners showed the Ohana way of the island.
This was the perfect fit for me and my son! I got the bedroom and he got the pull out couch. It was a wonderful experience and the added bonus of keyless entry was one less thing I had to keep track of!
Very run down
This was our 1st VRBO and we were delighted. This property is fabulous - spacious and well appointed. Good arking at the property is a bonus. Highly recommended.
Centrally located and spacious house with easy walking distance to cool shops and coffee spots. Fully stocked and large kitchen, easy parking and quick access to main roads. Highly recommend for a more "urban" Maui experience!
perfect
This place is huge for a one bedroom and within the price range we were looking for! The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed since we cooked in the whole time. Lots of storage as well! It was nice to have outdoor seating as well. We really appreciated the washer and dryer (steps away) and beach chairs. Thank you!
Thank you
Second time I have stayed at this cottage. It is lovely. Right in the middle of old Wailuku. Close to everything that I needed. Hopefully, I will stay again.
Large and comfortable 1 bedroom. Spacious kitchen. Easy to find and good location to visit Maui.
My stay here was awesome. Clean, well setup. I highly recommend this place.
