Unit: Maliko Retreat | Maui Guidebook Summary This eclectic antique Hawaiian cottage is perched atop a scenic jungle gorge with breathtaking views in every direction. Open and breezy; attention to detail shines from every facet. If you’re looking for a unique and authentic Maui vacation, Maliko Retreat should be among your top contenders. (Tip: If you only need one bed, the owners have a brand new studio cottage on the other side of this same property: check out "Maliko Coffee Cottage") Details Attention to detail permeates every aspect of Maliko Retreat. From the remarkable personal attention the owners give each and every guest, to the structural craftsmanship, restoration touches, furnishings and guest amenities, Maliko Retreat is clearly a labor of love for owners Sydney and Maurice Smith. This uniquely Maui home was originally hand-built in the time of Old Hawaii from old-growth redwood and cedar. Recently lovingly restored by the owners, all of the original details and ornamental woodwork have been retained. Added touches follow the theme of incorporating natural and re-purposed materials. A few examples include hardwood railings milled from a fallen Pu’unene monkeypod, tile and stone work incorporate river rock from the stream below, antique leaded glass doors and windows were reclaimed from plantation era estates, and the original cast-iron claw-foot soaking tub (with a killer view!) These are only a few of many; the Maliko Retreat cottage has a top-to-bottom list of unique touches, detail craftsmanship and interesting points of character. Designed in harmony with the 'aina Original builders in this time understood the land intimately; they had to be connected to the environment in everything they did (out of necessity.) The house was originally constructed without access to modern conveniences that we now take for granted – including electricity. The result is a design that masterfully harnesses the natural light and our dependable tradewinds to the home’s full advantage. Strategically placed ornate woodwork air vents are more than fine finish details – when coupled with the open and airy floorplan, the home breathes with the valley, cooling the home comfortably as it delivers an added bonus: a symphony of intoxicating scents from the flowering Maui rainforest below. The living room has a cathedral ceiling with floor to ceiling windows. The effect is powerful: Natural light streams into the home all day long, and you’re presented with a deep verdant scene of rainforest canopy unfolding into the background of blue ocean, West Maui Mountains and Molokai island. Views from the home also include Haleakala mountain and a seasonal waterfall. Being located on acres of undeveloped land, and adjacent to an even larger parcel of undeveloped forest, the home and property are incredibly peaceful and quiet. The only sounds you’re likely to hear from your private retreat are the songbirds, wind, and passing showers as they patter on the rainforest canopy below. The lanais have multiple tables and comfortable chairs, and the quantity and brightness of the stars and Milky Way are spectacular at night. When evening rains come in, the lanai is such a spectacular spot to watch the raindrops stream though the sunlight, quenching the jungle’s insatiable thirst to grow. And since most of the rain on the North Shore comes from our daily tradewind cycle, it typically (and conveniently!) blows in late afternoon and overnight, delivering the vibrant afternoon rainbows that the windward side of Hawaiian islands are famous for. Birders will especially appreciate the perspective, and the variety and quantity of birds that can be seen from the canopy vantage point. Pueo (native owls), nene (Hawaiian geese), plovers, stilts, majiros, hwamei, egrets, Java sparrow, Japanese white eye, doves and mynah are just a few of the many species of birds that call this area home. A large flock of egrets migrates twice daily past the cottage, while the feeder attracts smaller birds to the home all day long. (Binoculars are included.) The Owners Sydney and Maurice are exceptional hosts. They treat every guest as if they were family, welcoming all personally and freely offering unbridled hospitality and Aloha alongside their extensive knowledge of the area. Most requests that you might have they will graciously accommodate – they even offer to stock the kitchen before your arrival with your list of groceries for just the cost of the grocery store receipt! (I suggest letting them pick some unique local fruits, veggies and fish that you might not otherwise encounter.) The significant value added from owners this passionate about the paradise they lovingly steward can’t be overstated. Sydney and Maurice deliver a depth of genuine Maui experience that you’re guaranteed to count high among your cherished Maui vacation memories. The Grounds Being in a steep river-cut valley has protected the land immediately boarding Maliko stream from becoming plantation monoculture for pineapple, sugar cane or grazing cattle. Instead you will be treated to an enchantingly diverse jungle forest. Wild blooming tropical flowers, vines, palms, gingers, jungle plants and fruits. Guests are encouraged to pick fruit and flowers (and you will be welcomed with a basket of freshly picked fruit at checkin as well!) There are also small picnic areas, a stream with waterfalls and private natural pools so enticing, that even the most bashful will comfortably let go of their worldly cares to indulge in a skinny dip. Ancient Hawaiians used this valley, too – and there are even ancient lo'i and pictographs that the owners can bring you to view. The grounds are truly an untouched slice of natural Maui rainforest. The property is also home to the Maliko Estate Coffee farm – but you won’t find any clear-cut fields or mechanized rows of coffee farming – the hand-picked coffee grows in harmony with the jungle surroundings. Maliko Estate Coffee is shade-grown below the undisturbed lush jungle canopy. You can take a tour of the farm – or simply enjoy the half pound of natural farm-fresh coffee included with your stay! Activities The owners offer guests many informative activities and tours. Impromptu shorter tours are often freely given, while more comprehensive tours and activities are charged for. Fees are modest considering they are private and high quality – they also get rave reviews from past visitors. Tours offered include a Maliko Estate Coffee tour (you’ll take home a pound of fresh coffee), a basket weaving excursion, wild tea gathering and brewing, and “salad dressings from the jungle” tour where you gather edible leaves fruits and flowers to top your salads with.

  • Gorgeous 1BR Asian Cottage; Panoramic Views; Waterfall; Hike 22 Acre Property

Unit: Maliko Coffee Cottage | Maui Guidebook Summary This new Hawaiian studio cottage is perched atop a scenic jungle gorge with breathtaking ocean and valley views in every direction. Open and breezy; attention to detail shines from every facet. If you’re looking for a unique and authentic Maui vacation, Maliko Coffee Cottage or Maliko Retreat should be among your top contenders. The Coffee Cottage is a new, Asian style studio cottage with modern tiled shower, king bed, sectional sofabed with chaise, three bar stools with custom Koa Counter and Koi pond and fountain. (Other amenities can be found above.) Note: While it can sleep four, it is optimal for couples; the sofabed and king bed are in the same room. Details Attention to detail permeates every aspect of these homes. Unlike Maliko Retreat, the Coffee Cottage is close to the winding country road, so you can hear cars (this is not a highway!) You’re certainly going to hear plenty of songbirds, wind, and passing showers as they patter on the rainforest canopy below. • Romantic & Private Upcountry Maui Vacation Get Away... Perfect For Two People!

Perched atop the highest spot on the property and surrounded in the back with giant Eucalyptus trees, it boasts sweeping views from its large, covered patio/lanai. This inviting and elegant vacation cottage was designed for comfort, style, charm and seclusion. It boasts meticulous landscaping with an array of lush, tropical foliage and trees. This cottage is exactly what one would dream a luxury tropical guest house to be. As unique inside as it is outside, the Aloha Cottage boasts a pyramid-shaped skylight at the apex of the eight-sided, vaulted ceiling. You can lay on the bed at night and gaze up at the stars through this unique architectural feature. Intricately carved pieces, crafted by artisans in Bali, add a stunning touch to this Hawaiian guest house. A combination of recessed lighting and wall sconces, each with dimmer controls, allows you to adjust the ambience within this well-planned space. The spacious living area is enhanced by 14 foot tall open-beam ceilings. The cottage's terra cotta floors feature built-in radiant heat for added comfort. The design of the main-room, with its "living in the round", is so unique! One section offers an Asian-style sit-on-the-floor dining space with custom-built table for two, while another is dedicated to a cozy lounge area. There is a large wall-mounted flat screen TV and a stereo in the built-in wall cabinet. And finally, at the center of this amazing space, there is a king-size custom-crafted platform bed adorned with luxurious bedding. The kitchen is something any chef, or foodie, would fall in love with. It features gorgeous granite counter tops, a full-size refrigerator/freezer and a full-size, four-burner gas stove and oven. There is a stainless steel sink in front of a large 3-panel bay-window that looks out on to the bamboo garden. This kitchen is enhanced by a compliment of cabinets made of solid wood and hand-carved Teak wood drawer fronts. It is fully-equipped and stocked with everything any cook would desire. The bathroom space has been lavished in luxury and boasts a custom-built, six-foot teak vanity with double ceramic sinks. Above the sinks is a large vanity mirror framed by an ornately hand-carved, hand-painted, Balinese teak wood sculpture. And these are just a few of the features that depict the true attention to detail that was invested in every facet of the Aloha Cottage. For privacy, there is an added smaller room that is separated by pocket doors. This is where the marble shower, featuring wonderful dual-head Kohler fixtures, and the toilet are located. Large sliding glass doors lead out to the covered, 448 sq. ft. patio/lanai. Magnificent teak wood carvings adorn the outer deck walls as well as the brackets of each porch post. Because Aloha Cottage is uniquely situated atop a bluff, the porch/lanai assures guests complete privacy while still affording sweeping vistas of the forest and property below. Guests can enjoy a hot soak in the spa tub (made for two), lay back on a chaise lounge and take an afternoon nap, or simply listen to the birds singing while enjoying the gentle, cool breezes that make Upcountry Maui life so pleasant. Additionally, guests can dine al fresco at the cafe-style table.

  • Enjoy Maui's history in ocean view home in rural countryside - Permitted

Permit: STMP 2013-0004 TA-052-035-1744-01. Step back in time... to the early 1900's and explore Maui from the homestead of the first manager of Haleakala Ranch! This is a very unique vacation rental in Upcountry Maui. Kilohana was designed and built in 1916-1917 by the Haleakala Cattle Ranch as a retirement home for its first Ranch Manager, Louis von Tempski. In the Kama'aina tradition, we continue to make every effort to make Kilohana a welcoming, comfortable, safe and healthy home for our family and others. Kilohana retains its kama’aina flavor with a large ranch kitchen, living room and dining room (with koa wood dining table & furniture). The master bedroom enjoys a large koa wood bed from the missionary era. An 85 foot screened lanai provides a beautiful view of West Maui and “down-county.” Kilohana boasts a variety of more than 50 trees, shrubs and plants many of which were planted by von Tempski, his daughters, and our family. In keeping with Kilohana’s agricultural heritage, it is surrounded by pasture land and friendly animals can be seen just beyond the fence. The property is planted with more than 48 fruit trees; primarily citrus, but avocados and bananas will be found. They are there to be enjoyed by our family, friends and “guests.” Kilohana is located in Makawao, the closest thing to an urban center in Upcountry. Today Makawao is a lively community of cowboys and hippies, with galleries, boutiques, and restaurants. In the renovated stores, you'll find everything from a general store and an old-fashioned barbershop to health food, holistic medicine, and designer fashions. You can buy feed for your horse or gourmet olive oil for your kitchen, a bowl of saimin or fettuccini with porcini mushrooms. The town is a paradox of old paniolo and new age, pickup trucks and BMW's. That's what makes Makawao special - the old welcoming the new in the true Upcountry spirit. And all of this is just a mile down the hill from Kilohana. Forgot the bottle of wine for dinner? No problem... run down to Rodeo General Store in Makawao. Looking for fresh Local pastries.... nothing better than Komoda's Store, a local tradition! And a few miles down the hill: Haliimaile General Store, one of the best restaurants on Maui! We are happy to share our piece of Maui’s history with you and look forward to welcoming you to Kilohana! HOUSE RULES Aloha! • Adorable 1930's Gingerbread House....Permitted!

This renovated and adorable "Gingerbread House" is a studio cottage nestled amongst beautiful trees and tropical flowers and an organic farm growing Turmeric, Ginger, Papaya, Tangerines, Avocado, Oranges, Lemons, Grapefruit, Macadamia Nuts, Lychee, coffee and tropical flowers. The cottage is a "tiny home" (220 sq ft) but has high ceilings with a huge window looking out onto the majestic trees. Fully equipped kitchenette, beautifully tiled bathroom, and cedar lined walls. The internet INSIDE the cottage seems to be accessible by some and not others...however there is reliable internet in 3 other systems accessible ON the property both indoors and out that is available to you. We are located in a gulch/valley so cell service is better in some spots on the property than others. Verizon works well, AT and T is reportedly not good. But 1 minute up the road, out of the gulch, you will get service. The kitchenette is has a coffee maker, microwave, burners, toaster oven and full sized fridge. The bathroom is beautifully tiled and the entire cottage is lined with cedar. There is a seasonal stream flowing just 50 feet from the cottage with a great spot to sit and sip on coffee or wine....as well as an outside table and lanai with a chiminea (outdoor fire chimney). The Cottage has a queen sized bed. On the adjacent property is The Sacred Garden (free and open to the public) that is a beautiful sanctuary and nursery with two labyrinths, meditation gardens, picnic areas...all accessible to our guests. Jimi Hendrix stayed her in 1970 when he was on Maui filming "Rainbow Bridge". The previous owner was a big wave surfer that Jimi was partying with while on Maui.... We also have a 5 bedroom genuine log house on the property that is also a vacation rental if you have a larger group and want to stay on the property. This property will feel like you are "away from it all" when you are actually only minutes from shops and restaurants. Makawao Town is just 2 miles away, Haiku Town 3 miles, Paia town about 6 miles and the airport (and Costco) is just 15-20 minutes. There is a beautiful beach about 12 minutes drive away, great hiking 10 minutes away and Haleakala National Park is just 50 minutes from here. We are located at about 1100 feet in elevation so it is 10 degrees cooler than sea level which makes it perfect weather nearly all year round. (60's at night, 60-80's in the day). We are on the boarder of the "wet side" which makes for lots of rainbows...can be rainy at certain times...but cozy, green, lush and beautiful...and you can almost always drive to where it is not raining. The best of both worlds. We are happy to assist you with planning or booking other activities and have masseuses and other personal and spiritual growth practitioners, life coaches and relationship educators if you would like more of a retreat experience. The Sacred Garden also offers classes by donation, meditations on Sunday morning and full moon labyrinth walks monthly. We own a scuba/snorkel charter so if you are interested in getting out to Molokini Crater we are happy to assist you. The Gingerbread House is located on a gated property of 8.5 acres of lush. We are a working farm, and there is a main house on the property....and we are right next door if you need anything. We respect the balance between privacy and availability in the case of need.
