Polynesian voyaging canoes arrive in Hilo from New Zealand
Seven Polynesian voyaging canoes arrived at Hilo Harbor on Thursday, June 16. The fleet left New Zealand on April 19. A welcome ceremony will take place at Hilo Bay on Sunday this weekend, from 8 am to 2 pm for the more than 120 crew members representing 14 island nations. The voyage, which is called “Te Mana o te Moana” – “The Spirit of the Sea” has an environmental mission: to bring attention to overfishing of the world’s oceans, plastic pollution, rising sea levels, sewage and fossil fuel contamination, and the acidification of ocean water.

The canoes will arrive on Oahu on June 24. Additional crew members will arrive on Oahu from various Pacific islands for crew changes. The canoes will then continue on to Kauai on July 6 and then head for San Francisco on July 10. They will continue down the California coast and then return to New Zealand around January 30 via the Marquesas Islands and Tahiti.
