10th Annual Duke’s Ocean Fest
Duke’s Ocean Fest is a weeklong event that takes place in and around Waikiki August 21-28. The event celebrates Duke Kahanamoku (1890-1968), his life and legacy. He is perhaps the most remembered and respected Hawaiian surfer, a master of canoeing and a champion Olympic swimmer – a true waterman. Duke helped the surf sport reach unbelievable popularity, not only in Hawaii, but around the world. That’s why he is also called “the father of international surfing.”

The Ocean Fest, which is organized by the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, features watersports competitions and exhibitions, including surfboard water polo, tandem surfing, longboard surfing, as well as a one-mile swim race and the 2011 Hawaii Paddleboard Championships. Opening ceremonies begin on August 21 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. On August 24, Duke’s birthday, his statue which stands in the heart of Waikiki and overlooks the beach, will be draped in long lei strands. And on August 27, the 10-mile paddleboard race and the one-mile ocean swim will take place in Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai.
