  • Hale Iki (a tiny house in Volcano!)

THE SPACE Hale Iki is a fresh, light-filled, off-grid tiny house which made its media debut on HGTVs Tiny House Hunters. Since then it’s been upgraded with a solar refrigerator and a multitude of Pinterest-worthy additions. If you think tiny house living might be for you, we encourage you to come visit, see how it’s put together, and explore all the nooks and crannies. Perfect for couples or solo travelers, Hale Iki is nestled in the rainforest just outside Volcanoes National Park in a cleaning surrounded by a beautiful 3/4 acres of ferns and ohio trees. Take your french press coffee out on the lanai, or grill up your farmers market finds on our built-in gas grill. Snuggly bath robes and a comfy queen size bed piled with blankets keep you toasty on cool Volcano nights. Indoor/outdoor living will make you wonder how you could ever need more than 240 square feet! Some features of Hale Iki: • Spacious lanai for dining and relaxing, with full size gas grill and chiminea woodburning fireplace • Private, located on a 3/4 acre (and there's even a little lava tube!) • Ample Parking • Flashlights • Binoculars • Yoga mat • Guidebooks, magazines, and various other reading material • Board games (be a kid again!) • Outlets (3-prong and USB) • Solar refrigerator/freezer • Beautiful tiny gourmet kitchen with full size gas stove and oven • Cooking basics including coffee, tea, sugar, pancake mix, eggs when available, pasta and rice, oil and vinegar, a bottle of water, sweet treats, and a welcome bottle of wine. • French press coffee maker and tea kettle • Queen size bed with clean linens • Speakers for connecting your mobile device (blue tooth) • Skylights that let light stream in to the living space and shower • Slate bathroom • Real toilet (no composting toilet here!) • Toiletries, including shampoo/conditioner, sunscreen and lotion • Towels • Cozy bath robes BEFORE YOU BOOK Hale Iki is a very special place. Please read the section below, just to make sure it’s the right special place for you! 1. Accessibility. The house is much more accessible than many tiny houses, but there are a few steps along the way. There are two steps up to the lanai, and one into the house. Good news - unlike some tiny homes the bed is on the main floor, so no ladders to climb down in the middle of the night! 2. Water. We put the rainforest to good use! Rainwater is collected and used to run the house, which is perfect for showering and doing dishes, but not for drinking. Two bottles of water will be provided, and there is a water dispenser on the lanai if you need refills. 3. Lighting. All our electricity comes from the sun. The batteries charge up during the day and are stored for use at night. Turning off lights or electronics when not in use will help the energy last. The house has plenty of windows and amazing skylights. 4. Temperature. At 3,500 feet, Volcano can be a bit wet, and the temperature is about 10 degrees cooler than at the coast. We find it refreshing — a break from the heat and humidity! Hale Iki does not have an indoor heater, but there is a chiminea (outdoor fireplace) on the lanai. Our daytime temperatures are wonderfully mild, so just open the windows and doors for a refreshing breeze. The Big Island has 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones. It is always wise to dress in layers and to bring a light jacket, especially if you are visiting Volcanoes National Park at night (and you should visit at night!). 5. Location. Located on just over 3/4 of an acre and backing up to the forest reserve, Hale Iki is very private. There are few lights, which means spectacular stargazing when the sky is clear. Flashlights are available for those late night returns home, and motion sensing lights guide you along the lanai. 6. Connectivity. Time to let go of all your wires and obligations! Being off-grid and hidden on a large lot, internet isn’t currently an option. Some cell service is available. We do have a small TV and DVD player for evening electronic entertainment. You can rent recent titles at the Lower Store in Volcano Village or at the Red Box at the Foodland in Kea’au. A bluetooth speaker will let you hook up and play your tunes wire free. 6. Wildlife. All of Volcano is a rainforest and with it comes wildlife. There are lots of birds in our forest, including peasants which like to wander around in little packs. You’ll see them along the road and sometimes in the yard. They are fun to watch. We also have wild pigs — they have no interest in people, but love to tear up the yard looking for bugs! They are easily scared off. Just think of it as some entertainment and stories to tell when you get home! GUEST ACCESS You will have your own key and have the whole place to yourself. Your own tiny Hawaiian paradise. INTERACTION WITH GUESTS We live in Volcano and would love to welcome you to your new home. Our past interaction with guests has ranged from sharing dinner and wine, to hardly seeing them at all! Wherever you fall on the spectrum, if you need anything during your stay, we're just a phone call or text away. THE NEIGHBORHOOD Hale Iki is located 35 minutes from Hilo and about 2 hours from Kona. It’s in the back of a quiet neighborhood on just over 3/4 of an acre, backing up to the national forest reserve. Just across the highway is Volcano Village where you will find several restaurants, a community center, Volcano Art Gallery, and the wonderful early morning Sunday Volcano Farmers Market. 3 miles up Highway 11 is the entrance to Volcanoes National Park and the bubbling Kilauea Crater. GETTING AROUND This is a big island and a rental car is required to get the most out of your experience. OTHER THINGS TO NOTE Hale Iki is one of the few vacation rentals that accepts single night reservations and short notice stays. If you're visiting the volcano and don't want to drive back late at night, please message us! We would love to host you for an evening. There are some small, convenience-style stores in Volcano, but if you don't want to spend your valuable vacation time shopping, concierge groceries available with advanced notice.

  • 2 Miles From Volcano National Park Entrance

Centrally located near the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in Mauna Loa Estates subdivision, and only about 30 minutes to Hilo, you are convenient to all of the sights and sounds that the east side of the Big Island has to offer. From here, swimming and snorkeling in Punalu’u Black Sands Beach or in Hilo is a 30-minute drive in either direction, and the Volcanoes National Park is practically in your backyard. Hale ‘Ohi’a Lehua sits perfectly on its private, quiet landscaped 1/2 acre with citrus and other fruit trees in the backyard, and the native Hapu’u ferns surround the edge of the property. Enjoy BBQ’ing outside and the crisp mountain air at 3500’ elevation. The large lanai is the perfect place to relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the morning, or a great book in the afternoon. Cozy up to the gas fireplace in the living room on those chilly Volcano evenings! Hale ‘Ohi’a Lehua sleeps 6-7 comfortably with a regular king bed in the master, a queen in the 2nd bedroom, and a twin & double bunk-bed in the 3rd bedroom. The master bedroom has its own large private bathroom with a huge walk-in shower. WHAT TO PACK: The Island of Hawaii, aka the Big Island, boasts over 4,000 square miles and 10 different climate zones, within which are many micro climate zones! You may think that packing your favorite swimsuit and slippers (flip flops) is enough, but not true if you plan on doing any hiking or sightseeing around the island. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park can get quite chilly with temperatures dropping down to the low 40s at night, sometimes lower, so do bring your favorite warm pajamas and at least a light jacket. It actually snows often on Mauna Kea, but they close those roads whenever there are blizzard conditions present. If you plan on doing a lava hike, you should consider bringing your hiking boots, as you’ll want good ankle support for this 1/2-day or more experience. At the very least, bring a solid pair of tennis shoes and don’t attempt the lava hike in flip flops. - 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6-7) - Beds: 1 King, 1 Queen, 1 Twin/Double bunkbed - Television/Dish TV - NO INTERNET SERVICE AT THIS TIME – Please bring your own wifi device or use your cell phone - Full Kitchen - All Cooking Utensils - Microwave - Dishwasher - DVD/CD Player - Lots of DVDs - BBQ Grill - Gas - Washer & Dryer - Many Restaurants Close - No Smoking - No Pets - Hilo 30 min. - Kilauea 2 min. Thinking of moving here full-time and are looking at real estate? Hale ‘Ohi’a Lehua is the perfect solution to needing a furnished home until you either purchase or build your dream home in paradise. And we’re realtors! We are happy to help you find that perfect home, or lot to build! TA-149-975-4496-02 24hr contact

Every detail of this home, from the large covered lanai which is accessible from two bedrooms or from the living room through large sliding glass doors, to the hand-set lava fire pit with Adirondack chairs and outdoor shower with soaking tub, surrounded by native Hapu’u ferns and fragrant Kahili ginger, will delight your senses and draw you into the magic which makes Volcano one of the most beautiful places on earth. The interior is characterized by beautifully finished eucalyptus floors, a large open chef’s kitchen with panoramic windows, a spacious living area tastefully decorated with local Hawaiian and Asian-themed art, and centered around a wood-burning stove complete with original herringbone wood detail. There is also an extensive library of meticulously selected literature about Hawaiian art, culture and language for your enjoyment. Throughout the home, impressive skylights and a soothing, natural color palate compliment and enhance the stunning surroundings. The master bedroom and en-suite master bath provide sanctuary from the rest of the home, while the semi-open plan and high ceilings deliver a sense of closeness without compromising privacy. Both bathrooms are equipped with walk-in showers and modern rustic fixtures. The master bath is also equipped with a large bathtub and custom-designed window-side vanity. Perfect for families, honeymooners, design enthusiasts and artists like, the Ku’ulei Hale is the epitome of modern leisure, while paying cultural and architectural homage to the splendor of old Hawai’i.
