Hi'iaka's Healing Herb Garden, Big Island

This small herb garden in Kea'au offers a relaxing place to view native and non-native plants used for natural healing purposes. Creator and certified master gardener Barbara Fahs invites visitors to discover nature's medicine and will treat a whole host of health problems, including colds, migraine headaches, insomnia, toothaches, depression, PMS and addiction issues. Hi'iaka's Healing Herb Garden makes for a pleasant afternoon trip, and you'll likely leave feeling healthier than before.

Named after the Hawaiian goddess of gardening and herbal healing, Barbara's garden features over 100 species of Hawaiian plants, including many rare and endangered medicinal plants from Hawaii and beyond. Here you can learn about the history of Hawaii's medicinal plants and receive tips and advice for starting your own high-yield herb gardens.

The site also features a gift shop where you can sample herbal teas, tinctures, tonics and other remedies derived from plants grown in the Hi'iaka garden. Be sure to take Ms. Fahs' informative book, “Super Simple Guide to Creating Hawaiian Gardens,” home with you before you go. Many of the techniques and strategies described in the book are used at Hi'iaka.

Hi'iaka's learning center offers workshops, classes and internships throughout the year as part of the garden's commitment to educating people about medicinal plants. Self-led walking tours and guided garden tours are available for groups of up to 12 people.
