Pearl City is located on Oahu’s southern coast, about 11
miles (18 km) west of Honolulu downtown. The town's main
attraction is
Pearl Harbor, the site of the Japanese surprise attack
and the beginning of World War II for the United States
on December 7, 1941. Pearl City is situated right on the
harbor's shore.
The city encompasses 5.8 square miles (15.0 km²). According
to the 2000 census, it had a population of 30,976 people.
The population density was 6,215.5 people per square mile
(2,401.6/km²).
The racial makeup was the following: 17.24% White, 2.71%
African American, 0.27% Native American, 53.42% Asian, 6.15%
Pacific Islander, 1.41% from other races and 18.81% from
two or more races. 7.30% of the population was Hispanic
or Latino of any race.
The median household income was $62,036. Males had a median
income of $30,712 versus $28,408 for females. The per capita
income was $21,683. 6.2% of the population and 4.0% of families
lived below the poverty line.
