Magic Island Beach is part of Ala Moana Beach Park, a popular Honolulu city beach between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu. Many people come to Ala Moana and Magic Island to swim, bodyboard, surf, picnic, walk, jog or spend time on the grass near the ocean.

Although it is called Magic Island, this area is a man-made peninsula. The small curved beach sits at the end of the peninsula. Most swimmers choose the main Ala Moana Beach area instead of Magic Island Beach because the swimming area here is smaller, and parts of the ocean bottom can be rocky.

Magic Island Beach is protected by a rock barrier, so the cove is usually calmer than the open ocean. When the surf is up, waves can still wash over the rocks. Stay away from the barrier during those conditions. It is also unsafe to swim through the openings in the rock barrier because currents can be strong there.

Behind the beach are grassy lawns, trees and picnic tables, with views toward Waikiki, Diamond Head, Honolulu Harbor and the sunset sky. The Magic Island peninsula was built from dredged coral in the 1960s and completed in 1964. It was planned for a resort hotel, but the hotel was never built. The area later became public park space. The peninsula was renamed Aina Moana, meaning “land from the sea,” though many people still call it Magic Island.
