Kealii Reichel has one of the most beautiful and distinguished
voices in contemporary Hawaiian music. But he is more than a singer.
The charismatic artist has devoted his whole life to the promotion
and protection of Hawaiian culture in music and dance. He is a
singer and songwriter of international fame and also an accomplished
chanter, dancer and teacher, a kumu hula.
His music is captivating and uses traditional Hawaiian structures
and melodies together with a noticeable pop influence. Often his
songs include ancient chants and drums as well as parts played by a
symphonic orchestra. The dominant language in his songs is Hawaiian.
You will see that it is not always necessary to understand a
language. It is possible to feel it through music.
Kealii was born and raised on Maui, where he still lives, at least
when he is not traveling to his many concerts all around the world.
His album Kawaipunahele jump started his career in 1994. Ever since
then his star has been rising and today Kealii is the
internationally most successful Hawaiian artist and on top of the
Hawaiian entertainment industry.
He performed at Carnegie Hall and all over the United States, in
Japan and in Europe. He also opened concerts for Celine Dion, Sting,
Bonnie Raitt and others. Kealii is an amazingly gifted artist and
also a great teacher, doing his part of keeping the Hawaiian culture
and identity alive and growing.
