Like the girls from success group Na Leo Pilimehana, Mailani
Makainai and Lei Melket from Keahiwai started playing music together
in school. With their debut CD “Local Girls” (Na Leo’s first hit
song was “Local Boys”), they stormed onto the Hawaiian music scene
in 2002 and scooped up the coveted Na Hoku Hanohano music award for
the “Year's Most Promising Artist.”
Their songs, easy-going tunes with pretty voices and a light sunny
feeling, are streaming out of radios all over Hawaii and their CDs
are favorites especially with a younger crowd. Their songs are
original compositions dealing with love and loss, life and personal
experiences. The dominant language is English and the melodies are
more of a pop flavor than traditional Hawaiian.
The two young women have a great chemistry between them and even
though still new to the scene, their stage presence could not be
more professional.
