From the church choir to receiving the highest award in folk and
traditional arts, the National Heritage Fellowship, Auntie Genoa
Keawe has created an unmatched career and a treasure of wonderful
recordings and compositions.
She is known for her singing in a high voice, the famous Hawaiian
falsetto and for holding a high note for more than two minutes.
She has won numerous awards and has been a role model for
generations of singers. It was before World War II that Auntie Genoa
began to perform professionally and in 1946, she made her first
recording.
Auntie Genoa has made music history and is one of the big legends of
Hawaiian music, perpetuating the sounds of the islands for more than
six decades.
