Kualapuu at a Glance
Kualapuu is located in the northern part of Molokai near Kalaupapa. The population was 1,936 according to the 2000 census. In the Hawaiian language, Kualapuu literally means “hill overturned.” However, it is thought to be a corruption of Pu‘u‘uala, meaning “sweet potato hill.” The settlement is a former pineapple cannery village that was once associated with Del Monte Foods.
Kualapuu is also home to Coffees of Hawaii, a large coffee plantation that produces and distributes 100% Molokai coffee. Also located in Kualapuu is a 1.4 billion gallon water freshwater reservoir at the foot of a cinder cone called Kualapuu.
As of the 2000 census, there racial makeup of the town was 7.7% White, 0.5% Native American, 16.7% Asian, 4.75% Hispanic or Latino, 43.5% Pacific Islanders, 0.4% from other races and 31.2% from two or more races. The median household income was $37,422 and the per capita income was $15,373. About 15.1% of the population were below the poverty line.
