Pukalani, Maui

Pukalani, which means “heavenly gate” or “window to heaven” in Hawaiian, is the largest town in upcountry Maui. Situated near the slope region of Mt. Haleakala, Pukalani's temperature is cooler than the temperature in towns located at or near sea level.

While the place evokes a laid-back, country atmosphere, it has a commercial center that includes coffee shops and restaurants, including Starbucks and Pizza Hut. Also, the town has community and recreation centers, an 18-hole golf club and sports fields.

Pukalani has 7,380 residents as of the latest 2000 census count. Like other Hawaiian towns, Pukalani is home to people of diverse racial backgrounds, particularly Caucasians (33.97%), Asians (28.04%), Latinos ( 9.23%) and Pacific Islanders (7.38%). 28.97% of the population is from two or more races.
