to owner Guiseppe Avocadi, Kauai reminds him of the
Italian Riviera, a paradise of contrasting mountains and
sea surrounded by vibrant vegetation. His restaurant,
Café Portofino, reminds us of the Italian Riveria -
from its interior to candlelit tables and music to the
delectable dishes served.
Named as one of America’s 200 most romantic restaurants,
Café Portofino offers al fresco and salon dining. Lounge
rooms are built with marble floors where tables are lit
by candles. Dine on delectable Northern Italian dishes
while listening to soft music of harp or classical
guitar music. In the distance, as can be viewed from the
terrace or the main dining room, the beautiful Kalapaki
Bay accentuates the intimate, romantic mood evoked by
the restaurant.
Portofino means “port of the dolphins,” and the café is
named after Giuseppe Avocadi’s native town. Avocadi was
born and raised in Porto Fino, Italy near Genova Bay.
When he came to Hawaii in 1989, he brought with cooking
traditions passed through three generations. Avocadi’s
culinary knowledge and expertise earned him and his
restaurant many awards. Guiseppe will personally welcome
you to his café, and will check how your dining
experience just before you leave.
Café Portofino prepares pasta, fresh seafood, osso buco,
bread, and sauces. There are also fresh fish, chicken,
beef, and vegetarian dishes. Make sure to taste their
fresh ahi carpaccio, a trademark dish. Their pasta is so
light you could order one after another and not feel
heavy on the stomach. Dessert includes homemade gelato ,
ice cream profiteroles, tiramisu, and sorbet. After
dinner you can also hang out at the cappuccino and
espresso bar. Try any of their wide selection of Italian
and exotic coffees.
Café Portofino is best for intimate dining, such as
between couples, but the café also accommodates big
parties such as wedding celebration. The café has a
separate room for celebrations.
