One of the things that Kauai boasts of is that it offers
a different beat from the fast pace of city life. It is
practically untouched by modernity. This laidback lifestyle
is also reflected in the choice of transportation. In Kauai,
getting around the island is already half the adventure.
The best way to explore the island is to rent a car. That
way, you can sightsee at your own pace. There are a number
of car rental companies such as Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar,
Hertz, National, and Thrifty. Conveniently, their rental
booths are located just across the street from Lihue Airport.
For those who plan to stay in Kauai for a while, your best
bet is to avail of Hookipa Haven Vacation Services. They
offer discounted rates on weekly car rentals. For $160,
you can have your own vehicle to explore the island. During
the low season, the rates can even be as minimal as $148
a week.
It is a good idea to make your rental reservation in advance.
With the number of visitors wanting to hit the roads of
Kauai, supplies may be limited, particularly during the
holidays.
Driving around Kauai is quite an experience. It is easy
to navigate the roads as there is only one major highway
in the island. Right of Lihue is Kuhio Highway or Highway
56. It hugs the eastern coastline and will lead you to the
famous North Shore. Once you reach Kee Beach, the road ends
with the stunning views of the Na Pali Coast.
Going the opposite direction in Lihue would lead to the
Kaumualii Highway or Highway 50. It travels through the
south and southwest coast of Kauai. It also ends with the
Na Pali Coast.
A popular spot in Kauai is the Waimea Canyon. To get there,
you can take Waimea Canyon Road (Highway 50) or Kokee Road
(Highway 55). These roads merge halfway and will eventually
lead to the canyon.
Visitors are expected to follow the “aloha” customs when
it comes to driving. All passengers are expected to buckle
up and infants should be secured in their car seats. Remember
that on one-lane bridges, you are expected to yield to oncoming
cars. If you are the one passing through and there is a
line on the other side, let them go first. Pedestrians also
have the right of way, even if they are not in the crosswalk.
If driving isn’t your thing, there is always public transportation.
Kauai bus has 15 buses going around the island with 10 routes
that run from Monday to Saturday. However, buses do not
stop at the airport or at any of the major resorts.
Another interesting way to explore the island is by motorcycle.
You can rent one at Pacific Island Rentals, which can be
found across the Chevron Station in Kapaa. There is no bigger
thrill that the wind whipping through your hair as you drink
in the sights of Kauai.
For a more traditional option, try Kauai’s Taxi Company
which offers taxi, limousine, and airport shuttle services.
There are other taxi companies available such as Akiki’s
Taxi, Poipu Taxi and Scotty Taxi. You may also rent a bike
at the Kauai Cycle and Tour or at the Outfitters Kauai in
Lihue.
