Wainiha is a populated place in Haena, Kauai County located about 3
miles from Princeville and 8 miles from Kilauea. Wainiha is elevated
10 feet above sea level. Located in the northern shores of Kauai
County, Wainiha has acres of emerald mountains, waterfalls, streams,
forests, and rivers. Wainiha is also a few minutes walk from
beautiful beaches such as the famed Tunnels Beach, Ke’e Beach, and
Hanalei Bay. According to local legend, the sea caves found in
Wainiha were created by the fire of the Hawaiian volcano goddess
Pele when she was looking for a new home.
Wainiha has the best wet lowland forest in Hawaii. It also has
many of the world’s rarest flora and faunaAs such, Hawaii’s third
largest nature preserve is found in Wainiha. The preserve
encompasses the ecological system of Wainiha Valley, Mount Waialeale,
and parts of the Alakai wilderness. Several tropical botanical
gardens are also located nearby. The trailhead leading to the
majestic Na Pali Coast is also located in the area. Activities in
Wainiha includes kayaking, hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling,
windsurfing, and biking.
