Moloaa at a Glance

Moloaa, meaning “matted root” in the Hawaiian language, is quaint and secluded beach community located in the northern coastline of Kauai County approximately 3.41 km from Lihue Airport. The place is located halfway between Anahola and Kilauea; Anahola is 3.9 miles away while Kilauea is 4.9 miles distant. There are still a few homes in Moloaa. Largely undeveloped, this small residential area which encompasses a secluded valley, golden and white sand beaches, tropical and organic gardens, jungle-like landscapes, and sea water with various shades of blue. Still, real estate in Moloaa is growing, and Moloaa offers oceanfront condos, villas, beach cottages, and rental properties. Activities in Moloaa include snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, beachcombing, and kayaking. Birds are also copious here, with some species seen only in this pristine valley on the northern part of Kauai.

Moloaa is a peaceful rural community centered around the Moloaa Valley and the Moloaa Bay, a pristine yet quite unknown double crescent-shaped beach which was the setting for the pilot episode of Gilligan’s Island. A 200-mile stream that meanders the valley, cuts across Moloaa Bay, and meets the sea. A coastal hiking trail that runs along Moloaa Bay has also been recently discovered. Other highlights of the place include the Moloaa Valley Garden, a tropically landscaped valley that has been developed into a botanical garden, and the Moloa’a Sunrise Fruit Stand that offers organic smoothies, salads, and vegetarian sandwiches.

Much of the land covering Moloaa have been designated as Hawaiian Homelands, or areas reserved for housing of indigenous Hawaiian residents.
