Lihue at a Glance

Lihue, which is the county seat and the second biggest town in Kauai, is located on the southern coasts of Kauai 107 miles northwest of Honolulu. As the island’s county seat, Lihue has the island’s only airport, the Lihue Airport, which is located two miles east of the city. Kauai’s main seaport, the Nawiliwili Port, provides accommodation even to offshore vessels.

As it was once surrounded by sugar cane fields, sugar used to drive the municipality’s economy with a number of sugar plantations including the Lihue Sugar Company, the Amfac/ JMB plantation, and the Grove Farm Plantation. All three are no longer in operation.
Today, Lihue is still a rustic but buzzing urban center. As Kauai’s commercial capital, the 7.1-square mile municipality is dotted with numerous department stores and shopping centers. All titan retailer companies such as Walmart, Home Depot, and Costco operate here. Kauai’s biggest shopping mall, Macy’s, is located in the island’s biggest shopping center, the Kukui Grove Center. As a major tourist destination, Lihue boasts of museums, gardens, art galleries, three golf courses, a wildlife refuge, and an easy access to the majestic beaches in the southern and eastern coasts of Kauai such as the Kalapaki and Anini Beaches.

In the 1800s, Lihue was inhabited mostly by German immigrants. Contributions of the Germans include the establishment of the Lihue Sugar Cane Company in 1849 and the building of the Lutheran Church in 1881. Today, nearly half of the total population are Asians (49.24%). Based on a census 2000 data, Lihue had 5, 674 residents with 2, 178 households and 1,420 families. Caucasians (including Germans) make up 22% of these, while Pacific Islanders make up 6.43% of the population.

Lihue’s zip code is 96766.
