Kipu, Kauai

In the late 19th century, like other Hawaiian towns, sugar cane was the primary agricultural product of Kipu, providing employment especially to Asian immigrant workers. The Kipu sugar cane plantation was started in 1872 by William Hyde Rice, who became an appointed governor of Kauai by Queen Lili‘uokalani.

However, workers and families began to move out of the plantation in droves in the late 1930s. Sugar production was eventually abandoned in 1942, and the plantation was converted into a ranch. Today, Kipu Ranch offers eco-tour around its 4,000-acre land of mountains, rivers, waterfalls, and forests.

Approximately 13.6 km drive away from the Lihue Airport, popular tourist destinations of Kipu include the Kipu Waterfalls and Kipu Kai Beach where the endangered Hawaiian pheasant goose called Nene can be spotted occasionally.
