Kalaheo at a Glance

Kalaheo is a small community in the southern part of Kauai County located off Highway 50 near Kaukiuki Falls. In 1860, the 178-acre town started off as a leased land by King Kamehameha III to Duncan Mcbryde. Duncan’s son, Walter, bought the land after his father’s death. A large section of the turn was turned into a homestead. A nine-hole golf course named Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course was also built. After Walter McBryde’s death, the golf course and garden was given to the community.

Other highlights of the town include the renowned Kalaheo Coffee Company and the Olu Pua Gardens and Plantations. Olu Pua (which means “peace among flowers”)is a 12-acre estate which showcases the best flora species from all over the world. A few blocks from the town, there’s also the Inuoloue Reservoir and Alexanders Lake, and the Lawai International Center, which features 88 shrines between Kalaheo and Lawai.

In the Hawaiian language, Kalaheo literally means “proud day.” Based on a 2000 demographic study, 3, 913 people populated the town’s 2.95-square mile area. Approximately 70 % of the population are Caucasians and 28% are Asians (Filipino, Koreans, and Japanese, particularly). Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians make up 3.9% of the population only.

Kalaheo’s primary agricultural product is coffee. Together with tourism, Kalaheo’s coffee industry is main driving force behind Kalaheo’s economy and plays a vital contribution to the $25, 684 per capita income of the town. In 2005, its average household income was estimated at $67, 400, a figure significantly higher than the national figure of $58, 112. Only 2.4% of the general population were below the poverty line.

Kalaheo’s zip code is 96741.
