Anahola at a Glance

Approximately 110 miles NW of Honolulu, Anahola is located on Hawaii route 56 in the eastern coast of Kauai. Still largely undeveloped, this pristine, laid-back village nevertheless boasts of state-protected scuba diving and snorkeling sites. It offers the beauty of nature in their undisturbed states. Stalls selling flavored ice shaves, fresh leis, and local Hawaiian dishes including the tourist-favorite Anahola Granola and Maca Mania Bar.

According to a 2000 census, around 1,932 people dwell in Anahola. Among those who have taken residence in Anahola are Hispanics, Caucasians, Asians, Native Americans, and African Americans. Taking 48% of the ethnic distribution, Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians comprised the largest part of the population.

In 2000, 14.7% live below the poverty line. The average household income is $41, 772 while the average income for a family is $41, 302. Females earned more at an average of $27,000 compared to males’ $25, 875.

Once a thriving economic center with sugar plantations and mills, Anahola shows little trace of its once-booming industry. In 1991, a typhoon destroyed most of its agricultural properties and infrastructures. There’s also a controversy surrounding the selling of some land properties in Anahola by the government. Originally set aside for Hawaiian Natives at an affordable price, some were suddenly put up for sale to non-natives as long as they are at least of half-Hawaiian lineage. The lands were sold at around $4,000--- a sum beyond the capacity of most natives who have taken home in Anahola for a long time. Until today, the issue remains unresolved.

Anahola’s zip code is 96703.
