Kilauea Beach at a Glance
Kilauea Beach is where the Kilauea Stream empties into
the Pacific Ocean on Kauai’s North Shore. This small
beach is bordered by a densely vegetated hill and a rock
quarry, which is why Kilauea Beach is more famously
referred to as Quarry Beach or Rock Quarry Beach. The
rocky quarry, which overlooks the bay, was used during
the plantation days and has long been abandoned.
Kilauea Beach has a large pool which is created when the
Kilauea River strikes the sandbar. When the ocean is
calm, the pool is great for swimming. On the western
side of the beach opposite the pool is a wonderful
snorkeling spot. For fishing, the best spot is at the
mouth of Kilauea River.
Most days, though, Kilauea Beach turns murky from the
silt and mud carried by the Kilauea River. If the water
is murky, stay out of the water. It’s a good tip that
rip tides and sharks are present.
Kilauea Beach doesn’t have a reef barrier as well to
protect it from high ocean waves. When the sea is rough,
swimmers and snorkelers are advised to stay out of the
water. But because Kilauea Beach has no protective
barrier, this means the beach has plenty of challenging
waves for surfers and bodysurfers.
Kilauea Beach is great for spending a day of quiet.
Located off the beaten path, this secluded beach rarely
gets visitors. Sometimes, though, you’ll end up sharing
it with the Kauai vagabonds camping at the beach. Many
opt instead to kayak at Kilauea River bordering the
beach.
