Most Oahu visitors hike up Diamond Head for a great bird's eye view of Honolulu. A lesser-known lookout point is Pu'u Ualaka'a State Park, located half way up Mt. Tantalus. It's a 15-minute drive from Waikiki and the views from up there are amazing. In the east you can see Diamond Head Crater and in the west Honolulu Airport and Pearl Harbor.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our ohana a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2012 New Years!
With the high cool winds and lower temperatures than what we are use to, it really does feel a lot like Christmas. We've had a combination of high wind advisories and extra rain from these fast moving tradewinds that gives you the feeling you get when visiting Las Vegas around Christmas and New Years.
I hope everyone got the gifts that you were looking for from Santa and hope that 2012 will be even better than the last. We are wishing that all of our ohana gets a chance to visit Hawaii this coming year and that you have a fantastic time during your vacation.
Love and Mahalo to everyone!

Overnight, a CAT 1 hurricane developed and they are calling this one a super storm. Hurricane season ends on November 30th for Hawaii, so a late season hurricane shouldn't be no surprise but it looked like hurricane season was completely over.
All computer models for Hurricane Kenneth shows it doing a straight beeline for the Hawaiian Islands and traditionally, late season storms do move westward towards the Hawaiian Islands.
Of course, it's too soon to judge what this hurricane will do and where it will go but the fact that it went from nothing to a Cat 1 in a matter of only a few hours is truly a surprise. This storm has already proven itself and to not be taken lightly.
I have included a link to a weather map that tracks storms and hurricanes in the Pacific over a 12 hour period. You can click on this link daily as it updates daily automatically.
Also, don't forget that I have a link to NOAA Radio on this forum if you want to listen to the current and future weather for the Hawaiian Islands.

Here is the link for that map:

Today was a very windy day on Oahu's windward coast. The trades were making the ocean a bit too choppy for swimming. The photos show how quickly the weather can change in Hawaii. When I arrived at Waimanalo Beach Park, it looked very gloomy and dark. About a half hour later, the sky was blue over the ocean. Another half hour later, it was back to gloomy weather. It's really interesting to watch the clouds move by so fast!

I visited last year staying in Waikiki and saw the North Shore. We went to the Honolulu Arts museum and two paintings that I was thrilled to see were one by Van Gogh "Wheat Fields" and the other by Gauguin. In the hustle and bustle of Waikiki I didn't get a good sense of what its actually like living there. The hotel maid was from China, yes China, not Taiwan or at least that what she said.

Vehicles parking on residential streets seems like a problem and beyond the island being over-built, what are the issues there.

Here are a few photos from yesterday and today taken at Magic Island and Ala Moana Park. Considering that it was a holiday weekend, it was relatively empty.
It seems like they dont spend much money just walking through the forest. Also how long do people usually do it for and do many people do it? Is the Perfect Getaway a glorified version of Kauai?? Sorry about all the questions but if someone could answer I would appreciate it/

Rainfall Data

This evening I found a VERY COOL site for rainfall data!!! Temps around the islands are easy to obtain and predictable, but rainfall is a very critical issue when people want to move to Hawaii. Some parts of every island are always wet and humid (which makes them lovely for the tropical landscaping), and other parts are dry (sometimes desert-like) and sunny nearly all the time. Depending on one's temperament, knowing these facts can make a huge difference to one's comfort level and enjoyment.
It also makes a huge difference for those who plan on gardening, farming or who will live in areas with no public water service. Since water wells are rare in Hawaii, no public services means that you'll be collecting rain water from your roof to meet your household needs (it's called "catchment"). Catchment is nothing to be afraid of (if the house is properly equipped) and it's very common, particularly on the Big Island.
The University of Hawaii has this neat-o interactive map right here:

http://rainfall.geography.hawaii.edu/int...vemap.html

After agreeing to their copyright thingy, you can go to any island and click to a VERY SPECIFIC location, because UH has provided hundreds of data points from the reporting stations located sometimes as little as 1/4 mile apart! This is a BIG DEAL on the Big Island -- for example, the rainfall at Kona Airport is 13" a year, which is unsustainable for catchment and requires you to irrigate, yet just 2 miles mauka (uphill) in Kalaoa, you'll get around 35" a year. Since 40" is the national average for the US, in Kalaoa you won't need to water your lawn as much (the forest starts just above this zone). And just 1/2 mile closer to Kailua-Kona at the same altitude, the rainfall is 55 inches!
You can click ANYWHERE that's inhabited (not just their main stations) when in zoom mode, and an "X" will show the spot, followed by some very precise data.
I was getting very frustrated with the usual rainfall maps of the whole island, because they are charted in various "belts" and each belt covers a wide range of 25 inches or more, which is no help when you are making a critical decision for buying property. Public water is available in most subdivisions near Kailua-Kona, but we want to garden and not have big water bills. And, we like to see natural trees around us, not just those in peoples' yards!
I hope the readers here will find this useful; personally it's the most valuable planning tool I have yet seen!
Cheers
Cheers
