I am thinking about moving to hawaii with my wife and baby. I am tired of the stress and bad people here in Florida and the other states. I hope my wife can transfer to the wal-mart in Kahului/Maui. Does anybody know what they are paying the associates there. I also would like to find work there and I have experience in retail, security, construction, landscaping/lawn maintenance and also a 2 year degree in private investigations. What is our chances of survival there?

Never mind......From what I have read on other sites.....You have to be a rich person to afford to live there, or a single person with enough money to live on while sharing an apartment. I guess to start a new life for my family and I....Hawaii would not be a smart choice. I asume Hawaii is a perfect example as a Capitalist structured state. A very thin line between money spenders and money needers. Maybe I'll take my chances in the crime riddled "Sunshine State" Florida. Yeahhhh Mickey Mouse

Aloha,

I'm looking to visit Oahu at the end of this year (Nov/Dec 2010) for around 4 - 6 weeks.

I'm from Cornwall in the UK, female, aged 28, and I would be travelling by myself. The prime aim of my trip is to surf, meet people, explore the islands and enjoy myself!

I don't know of anyone in the UK who has spent a long time in Hawaii, it tends to be more of a 2 week holiday destination for people here. Therefore I have a few questions which I think someone from Hawaii is best placed to answer. I hope you can help!

Would it be feasable to stay on a campsite in Oahu for this amount of time? I'm looking to travel on a budget. Are there washing facilities (for clothes and me!) and places to keep my surfboard secure at the campsites?

Do you think it would be easy to meet other young travellers at a campsite? If not, could you recommend another place to stay which may be more suitable?

Apologies for all the questions, it's a lifetime dream to spend a few months in Hawaii surfing and exploring, but it's not on the typical "uk traveller" route, so I don't have anyone to ask about where's best to go.

Many thanks in advance for all your help.
What is the best way to look for a job on the Big Island? Should we look and get a job first, or should we move then look?
We talked about taking another vacation to just look for a job, but didn't know if this was a smart thing to do as we need to sell the house first.
Kids are in school now, so we need, or would like to move during the summer either in 2010 or 2011.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick one, I'm from the uk and moved to Kailua about 4 days ago...yep jet lag still a slight issue. My fiance lives here and I've moved here until my US visa comes through, hopefully in the next month or so.

We met in Hong Kong, having lived there for two years, so moving here is a refreshing change to that concrete city. I did love it though.

Anyway, my main question is, how on earth do expats meet here. In hong kong, there were expat websites everywhere, with meet and greet nights...clubs....etc etc. I've scoured the internet for hours and there doesn't seem to be the same thing in Hawaii. Unless of course I'm going to the wrong places.

We are both very outgoing and love to hike and climb and do like the odd bevvy or ten.....!!

I'm finding it a little weird being british, as I'm met with very different responses...its quite funny. I've heard people say..."you talk funny"...."your not american"...etc etc. They look at me like I've got two heads and don't know what to say.

Are there many Europeans on Oahu or are they pretty thin on the ground?

Anyway, I'm loving the people and the area, so am looking forward to getting into the lifestyle pretty quick. Once I have our US visa, I can search for work too....fingers crossed, I can volunteer for a while until I find something suitable. I work in the animal industry and there seems to be a lot of them here...hahah.

If anyone can point me in the right direction as to how to break the ice in oahu, I would be very grateful

thanks

We are traveling to Hawaii on January 30th to February 7th. We will be staying on Oahu the entire time at Waikiki beach. We will plan one day trip to the big island. We are not renting a car. In Oahu we want to visit the various beaches that have great snorkeling. We also would like to visit an area that has great waves for body surfing. What beaches have what we are looking for and what is the best way to get around to these beaches? Rent a car, bus, taxi, bicycles, etc.

For the big island, we are thinking it would be good to see the volcanoes. I wanted to avoid a tour, so we were going to fly into Hilo and rent a car. Does that make sense? Where can I find the cheapest flights?
Please let me know. Thank you.

I will be traveling with my wife to Oahu (Honolulu) from Dec. 07 until 9 or 10, depending to our activities. Could you be so kind to tell me where is the best area to find hotel not too expensive (near to the beaches) to stay, because i have been reading about the traffic congestions in the city and we are not going to rent a car. So we will be moving by bus, taxi u other.
Other thing: are these beaches allowed to visit? There exists any restrictions or private areas?
Thanks again for your cooperation and sorry for my poor english.
