Now in its sixteenth year, the Kona Brewers Festival promotes Hawaii’s burgeoning craft brewing industry with a positive environmental message, whilst encouraging local restaurants, chefs and breweries to work together. As for the visiting public, there’s plenty to enjoy. In fact, the festival aims to have a positive effect all round, whilst encouraging interest in the industries involved, the profit from the festival is used entirely in support of local, non-profit organizations.
The focal point and culmination of the festival is the beer tasting, set to take place this Saturday, March 12. The afternoon’s refreshments are supreme examples of some cracking good beers from some 35 microbreweries from across the whole of the U.S. Whilst this gives visitors the chance to decide for themselves which of the beers on offer is most pleasing to their taste buds, there will also be awards for the top 5 national brewers. A competition sure to get the tongues wagging and debate underway! Add to this some 25 Big Island chefs serving up culinary delights and it’s hard to see how anyone will leave anything less than satisfied!
The tasting itself will take place in King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel, however there are various events planned all around Hawaii’s Big Island.
For example this Thursday March 10 sees a Brewers Pa'ina at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort. This outdoor feast will feature beer based dishes (!) as well as a chance to sample some great beers and take part in a silent auction. See below for ticket information.
Meanwhile, this Friday morning sees a golf tournament begin at the Big Island Country Club. This 4-person team scramble will use the Peoria scoring system and have a sponsored $10 000 hole-in-one prize, with half of the amount going to charity! Finally, the festival also incorporates an Aloha Concert at Aloha Theater, and a 16 mile ‘Run for Hops’ set to begin and end at the Kona Brewing Company Brewpub!
