Welcome to Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a tiny overseas territory of the United Kingdom.
Located at the very southern tip of Spain, it is mainly
just a huge rock of sand and limestone, 3.1 miles (5 km)
long and 0.6 miles (1 km) wide.
Gibraltar is only a stone's throw away from Africa and on
a clear day, you might be able to see Morocco in the distance.
The 20 miles (32 km) of ocean that separates it from Africa
is called the Strait of Gibraltar.
Throughout history, Gibraltar's harbor has been considered
a strategic location standing guard over the Mediterranean.
Trade ships came and left this easy-to-reach port. Battles
have been fought here. And today, Gibraltar is still one
of the busiest harbors in the Mediterranean.
A few nice beaches line Gibraltar's 7.4 miles (12 km) of
shoreline. Besides swimming, snorkeling and diving, you
can go on a boat trip in search of dolphins, which are often
times seen in the waters offshore.
Or visit the impressive St. Michael's Cave, a stunning natural
grotto, the Gibraltar Museum, which also features a well-preserved
Muslim bathhouse, or the Great Siege Tunnels, which were
gun emplacements carved out by hand during the 1779-83 siege. |
