Welcome to the Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is a fairly new country, born on January
1, 1993, after the Czechoslovak Federal Republic was divided
into two independent states - the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
But everything else about this country is ancient. In fact,
the Czech Republic is one of the most historic countries
in Europe, full of old castles, cathedrals, museums and
manors. Most first-time visitors are impressed by the country's
magnificent Baroque, Renaissance, Gothic, Art Nouveau and
Cubist buildings.
The capital of Prague is a thriving metropolis known for
its stunning medieval center. As you wander through its
alleys you might feel like you entered a time machine and
were beamed back into the 18th century. No wonder that the
city is on the Unesco World Heritage list. Situated on seven
hills, Prague is crisscrossed by a maze of narrow cobblestone
streets, dark passages and ancient squares. There are numerous
churches, museums, galleries and an 1100-year-old castle.
On a warm summer day you can sit outside in a street cafe
and enjoy the city's ancient flair and lively atmosphere.
Most visitors stay in Prague for the entire time of their
visit. Those who venture out will find themselves surrounded
by many more treasures, less crowds and much lower prices.
The country is dotted with numerous hot springs, which have
been used for medicinal purposes since the 15th century.
Karlovy Vary is one of the most famous spa towns in the
country. Here you can drink the precious, regenerative water
right out of the fountain.
The country's natural landscape is very diverse. Mountains,
canyons, lowlands, lakes and forests are the main features.
For a unique outdoor adventure, visit the Moravian Karst
located north of Brno. This hilly region boasts a spectacular
natural landscape carved with canyons and more than 400
caves, which were created by the Punkva River.
Don't forget to try the famous round, wafer-thin waffles,
which come in many flavors. These Lazenske Oplatky are for
the Czech as crêpes are for the French or burgers for Americans.
The most famous drinkable delicacy is the green-bottled
herbal Becherovka liqueur. This fine alcoholic beverage
is known as the country's herbal "medicine." |
