For the 18th time on July 4th, 2009, the annual Independence Day fireworks show took place at Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu. The fireworks show is the 23rd largest in the nation and everyone seemed to enjoy the colorful display. Here are some photos from this event last night. ... [Read more]
Christmas in Honolulu is green and tropical and many light decorations can be seen in the city and the rest of the island. Every year, Honolulu Hale, located in downtown Honolulu, hosts an event called Honolulu City Lights where you can see Hawaiian style Christmas decoration. The admission is free, and it is worth a visit, especially at night when all the lights are lit. Here are some photos I took of the Honolulu City Lights display. ... [Read more]

One of my most favorite and “can’t-wait-for” events in Hawaii is the annual Greek festival that takes place at the end of August at the McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park. This year’s festival again featured lots of Greek music, Greek food and of course Greek Ouzo that contributed to the good mood of the participants. People from all ages and ethnicities enjoyed and danced under the cheerful sounds of the Greek music group FOTIA, who were here from California to sing and play at this event. Greek music is so unique that even the famous Hawaiian singer Makana came to listen to the guitar and bouzouki sounds of FOTIA. In addition to FOTIA’s live performances the... [Read more]

Independence Day, 4th of July, is a big event and a holiday all over U.S. and people in many cities gather and celebrate the day. The peak of the celebration is the evening fireworks. Just like the other U.S. states, Hawaii celebrated with fireworks as well. The fireworks show took place in Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu where the approximate number of people gathering in the park reached 50000! I was there too and yes, it was really really crowded! I noticed each year more and more people come and it gets busier and bisier. This 4th of July event happened on Friday, so this fact itself increased the number of visitors. Anyway, I arrived at Ala Moana Park at about 8:10 pm and the fireworks... [Read more]

It is the gay month! And like it or not you will see many gay events happening in June in Hawaii and in many other places in the world. Yesterday in Honolulu gays and lesbians celebrated the annual event with a pride parade in the morning and a festival afterwards. The gay and lesbian festival took place at the McCoy Pavilion and began at 11:30 am. Many couples gathered and celebrate with their fellows. There was music, drinks, food and the police was there as well. The reason the police was there was to make sure that nobody disturbs the gay festivities due to the fact that some people don’t like gays. Luckily there was not any accident because Honolulu and Hawaii are more open-minded than... [Read more]
If you love food and you live in Honolulu or you visit Honolulu in June, you should not miss the Flavors of Honolulu annual festival, a three-day event that takes place at the Honolulu Civic Center Grounds, across from the Mission Houses Museum in downtown Honolulu. Yesterday, June 28, 2008, was my second visit to the Flavors of Honolulu. My first one was a year ago in June 2007. Honestly said, I was a bit disappointed by this year’s presentation. When I arrived at the festival I noticed that fewer restaurants participated in the event compared to last year. Last year there were more than 20 Oahu restaurants participating in the event, including the health food store Down to Earth, which had... [Read more]
It is a tradition each year in June in Honolulu, Hawaii gays and lesbians to get together and celebrate the Honolulu Pride Festival. This morning at 9am there was the gay Pride Parade starting from from Ala Moana Beach Park and going all the way to Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. On the sidewalks you could see many gay and lesbians fellows, as well as relatives and friends of gay couples. Of course there were some curious tourists who did not know about the parade and what was going on but by seeing the Rainbow flags they could easily figure it out. Many of the participants at the parade had wallpapers expressing their thoughts regarding equal marriage rights. Other just had fun dancing, dressed in... [Read more]
Yesterday (05-26-2008) was Memorial Day and the annual lantern floating ceremony took place at Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu. This year it was the 10th anniversary of this lantern floating celebration. It has become a tradition for Oahu’s residents to pay respect to the ones who did the “ultimate sacrifice” in wars they fought for the United States. The lanterns are set afloat into the ocean and they float along the shore until the ceremony is over. Each lantern represents a killed hero. Last night there were over 1600 lanterns floating on the ocean at Ala Moana Park. It is a beautiful sight. I took some pictures you can see if you scroll down. As you can see, the park was... Celebrate Hawaii and being in Hawaii every Friday evening with the Aloha Friday Fireworks at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. You can get a great view to the fireworks from Waikiki Beach. If I was you I would just sit at some of Waikiki’s Beach bars and enjoy the fireworks with a glass of wine or a Hawaiian cocktail. Just a note, if you are too close to the fireworks you may find out they are very loud. But who cares! The closer the better because you will have even better view than the others. Happy Aloha Friday! Fireworks perform at: 7:30 p.m. (October to March) 8:00 p.m. (April to September) Read More →
