Lahaina Beaches

Lahaina on Maui is a popular tourist destination. The small town in a way resembles Europe with its cute little cafés, restaurants, small boutique shops and colorful buildings, situated along its main street called Front Street. The town has a couple of small beaches located along Front Street, one of which is located right in front of the Lahaina Shores resort and the other one is about half a mile south of it. The beach near the Lahaina Shores has some shade and it is also a home of the popular Feast at Lele luau. Right there is the popular oceanfront restaurant Pacific‘o as well. Both Lahaina beaches offer beautiful views to the island of Lanai. Lahaina’s beaches are not the... [Read more]

Makapuu Beach

Makapuu Beach Park is located right across Sea Life Park Hawaii on the east shore of Oahu. The beach is a pretty place and it offers nice views and picture-taking opportunities. However, it is not a good beach for picnics because the beach is narrow and doesn’t have much shade. Swimming is also not recommended if you are not an experienced swimmer. Waves are usually high and dangerous. There is a bathroom and showers on the beach. When I visited yesterday, I noticed that the bathroom was very dirty. The toilet paper was on the ground and someone had decided to use the bathroom’s floor for their needs. If you are looking for a good swimming and picnicking beach in the area, go to Waimanalo... [Read more]

Waimanalo Beach Park

Waimanalo Beach Park is the longest white-sand beach on Oahu, located on the island’s east shore. Spanning over a distance of three miles, Waimanalo Beach is a great spot for swimming, bodyboarding, kayaking and barbecuing. It is never crowded even on the weekends. On a clear day the beach looks better than on a postcard! The water is azure blue and crystal clear. There are many trees along the shore providing plenty of shade. The only disadvantage of Waimanalo Beach is that there are many broken glass pieces hidden in the sand and grass, so be aware of that and don’t walk barefoot. Also watch where you put your towel. ... [Read more]

Ala Moana Beach in Honolulu flooded?

In all the years I have lived in Hawaii, one of my favorite places to go to has been Ala Moana Beach Park. Friday afternoon I went for a casual swim and on the way there I noticed that the Ala Wai Canal was unusually full, and when I got to the beach park, I saw something I had never seen before – there was water near the second lifeguard tower on a big part of the beach. Was that just the hide tide or the high waves? I don’t think so. What I think is that little by little Hawaii is being flooded because of global warming. Several months ago I read in the newspaper that according to some University of Hawaii researchers, Waikiki Beach along with its hotels, Ala Moana Park and Magic Island... [Read more]

Maunalua Bay Beach Park, Hawaii Kai

Maunalua Bay Beach Park (view map) is located in one of the finest Oahu neighborhoods - Hawaii Kai. It is a very scenic bay and the water is usually azure blue. From the beach you can see the finest of the finest of Oahu’s neighborhoods - Portlock - where the house prices range in upper seven digit numbers. Maunalua Bay Beach Park is not a good beach to swim because there is a shallow coral reef, however, it is a good beach for water sports, such as parasailing and jet skiing. Another in-water tour to Maunalua Bay Beach Park is offered by Hawaii Duck Tours. It is a great way to explore the bay and stay dry. Maunalua Bay Beach Park is a good location to have picnics as well (if you don’t... [Read more]

A day at Hanauma Bay – a story with photos

Today Ina and I decided to go to Hanauma Bay. In fact, this is the first time that I actually visited Hanauma Bay, although I have been on Oahu for more than 4 years already. So we took bus number 22 from Waikiki and in no time we were at Hanauma Bay. When we arrived we first had to get visitor’s passes which are $5 per person, but we got them for free because we are Hawaii residents. We only had to show our local ID cards. Then when we went in. First we had to watch an 8 minute long, educational movie of Hanauma Bay, which included information about the reef and the underwater world in the bay. The movie also teaches the visitors that they should not touch the coral reef or the fish but only... [Read more]
