Even though it is so affordable, I don’t often go to the One dollar movie theatre at Restaurant Row. Today was one of those days. If you want to see a movie in a theater for cheap, this is the place to go. Movies indeed cost only one dollar and this price has not changed since I know the place (which is for the last 5 years).
One thing you should know though, on their website it says that if you attend a movie before 3 pm, the price is only $0.50 per movie. I did attend a movie before 3 pm (it started at 2:45), but the price was $1, not $0.50. So maybe the movie has to end before 3 pm to get the discounted rate. Of course this is not a big issue. It is just bit confusing.
If you plan to go there, note that outside food and drinks are not allowed. You can buy food and drinks inside. There is even an entertainment center where you can have some fun before or after the movie. There are various video and computer games you can try out (something like in Dave and Busters).
Anyway, today I felt like watching a suspenseful movie, so I decided to watch “The Strangers.” In fact, this movie turned out to be much more than suspense. It is a psycho-thriller horror movie where the audience, including me, was spooked all the time. The scenes were very cruel and bloody. I would not recommend this movie to people who are scared of blood. People quite literally get butchered in this movie.
What also surprised me was that there were several couples with small kids – between 3 and 8 years of age – who were also watching the movie “The Strangers.”
Why is a small kid allowed to watch a horror movie, even if an adult accompanies it? If an adult gets scared from a movie like that, what about the tender child’s mind? After all, children believe what they see on the screen and often times copy what they see… and then we complain why there are so many young adult crimes in the United States…and school shootings and the like.
At the beginning of the movie “The Strangers,” it was stated that it is inspired by true events. When I came home I researched the story because I wanted to know more about what really happened to Kristen McKay and James Hoyt, who were said to be slaughtered in their remote house on the night of February 11, 2005. Well, guess what? It turned out to be all fiction! There has never been a murder like the one shown in the movie. I wonder why the filmmakers play with people’s minds and make exaggerated claims. I doubt that everybody who sees the movie goes home to research the story to find out that it’s all but fiction.
This is the one dollar movie theatre at Restaurant Row.

Restaurant Row is a popular business and entertainment center in Honolulu, Oahu. It is located on Ala Moana Blvd near Honolulu downtown. The place has several office buildings built in a circle and in the middle of it is an open area where there is a bar, food tables, palm trees, gardens, a movie theatre and of course restaurants.
I used to work in that area several years ago and I happened to pass by today again – Saturday July 5th in the afternoon. Despite its name “Restaurant Row,” all the restaurants were closed but Subway! So if you wanted to eat something, you would not find anything else but a subway sandwich, where there was a long waiting line.
Maybe the restaurants were closed because of the long holiday weekend. I don’t know if they are closed on a normal Saturday or Sunday, but if you plan to go dining there in a weekend after a big holiday, don’t get disappointed to find out that only Subway is open.
Despite that, Restaurant Row is a good place to chill out for a bit and have a drink in the open bar there. If you don’t want to drink you can just get a book and read at one of the many tables there.
And here are some Restaurant Row photos.

In all the years I have lived in Hawaii, one of my favorite places to go to has been Ala Moana Beach Park. Friday afternoon I went for a casual swim and on the way there I noticed that the Ala Wai Canal was unusually full, and when I got to the beach park, I saw something I had never seen before – there was water near the second lifeguard tower on a big part of the beach. Was that just the hide tide or the high waves? I don’t think so. What I think is that little by little Hawaii is being flooded because of global warming.
Several months ago I read in the newspaper that according to some University of Hawaii researchers, Waikiki Beach along with its hotels, Ala Moana Park and Magic Island will be completely under water in 50 years.
So is this the start?
Independence Day, 4th of July, is a big event and a holiday all over U.S. and people in many cities gather and celebrate the day. The peak of the celebration is the evening fireworks. Just like the other U.S. states, Hawaii celebrated with fireworks as well.
The fireworks show took place in Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu where the approximate number of people gathering in the park reached 50000! I was there too and yes, it was really really crowded! I noticed each year more and more people come and it gets busier and bisier. This 4th of July event happened on Friday, so this fact itself increased the number of visitors.
Anyway, I arrived at Ala Moana Park at about 8:10 pm and the fireworks show started at 8:30 pm. I did not dare to go all the way to the beach from where I could have had en even closer look at the fireworks because it was so busy. People were playing with fire crackers and I thought that it wasn’t safe, so I stayed back in the grassy area.
The fireworks were nice - some had palm tree shapes, heart shapes, circles and smily faces. The show lasted 20 minutes and here are some pictures for you to see.
