Sugar Cane Train

sugarcanetrain.JPGThe Sugar Cane Train is one of the most popular land-based Maui activities, with over 5 million visitors taking the tour since the 1970s. The train, officially called the Lahaina-Kaanapali and Pacific Railroad, is an exact replica of the real sugar cane train of the 1900s. Guests will easily recognize it by its red vintage exterior and unmistakable old-school charm. Some of its elements actually come from the real train dating back to the 1800s!

The train offers a one-hour ride through West Maui, starting from Lahaina Town and ending at Puukolii. The trip spans more or less six miles, including a stretch over a 400-foot wooden trestle. At this point, make sure to look out the window and check out the ocean views—it’s said to be the highlight of this Maui activity. In the winter, humpback whales playing in the water are a common sight.

The stretch through Kaanapali town is also very scenic. The coastal views here are simply breathtaking, and most of its patrons will attest to that. On clear days, you may even see the nearby islands of Molokai and Lanai in the distance.

The Sugar Cane Train can accommodate 200 passengers at a time, with room for a singing tour guide who gives interesting narratives on local history and industry. Locals often take the tour even if they know the area by heart, just to hang out and meet new people. You can also reserve the train for parties, receptions, or even weddings-it’s definitely a twist in tradition!
