Pony Express Tours is a family-run business that has been offering horseback rides on Maui for 25 years. It offers one of the most peaceful Maui activities, strolling by the countryside on horseback with views of the 10,000-foot Haleakala mountain in the distance. Among the sights you’ll see here are Makawao, Kula, Lahaina, Ulupalakua, Napili, Kaanapali, Wailea, Kihei, La Perouse, Makena, Oheo Gulch, and the breathtaking West Maui Mountains.

For a real cowboy experience, try the Haleakala Ranch Paniolo Ride. This two-hour trip takes you 4,000 feet above sea level to enjoy spectacular views of the Pacific and nearby islands. During the ride, you’ll also learn about Hawaiian cowboy culture (paniolo) and local history, and pass through rolling pastures in Maui’s largest cattle ranch.

More experienced riders may be interested in the Ka Moa O Pele or Junction Ride. Spanning over 7.5 miles, the ride takes you down the scenic Sliding Sands Trail to the famous Haleakala Crater. The descent is 2,500 feet deep, so it’s a little challenging for inexperienced riders. Pony Express recommends at least moderate riding experience for adults, and at least 6 prior rides for children 10 to 12 years old.

Both tours include full weather gear, food, and refreshments. To ensure the riders’ safety, the company requires that all riders be at least10 years of age and weigh less than 235 pounds. Pregnant women are not allowed to take the tour. Although there’s no age restriction, people over 65 are advised to get medical consent to make sure they’re fit for the ride.
