Maui Hiking Safaris
Here’s a unique Maui activity that everyone in the family can enjoy. Maui Hiking Safaris offers land tours ranging from short and easy to full-day adventure hikes. It’s a great way to explore Maui’s rich natural heritage and see sights not often seen by the average tourist. Its owners hiked on Maui for 27 years and have been offering tours since 1994.
The most requested tour is the Haleakala Waterfall Hike. As the name suggests, you’ll get to explore the waterfalls of Haleakala, a 10,000-foot volcano believed to date back over 750,000 years. You’ll start at a height of 500 feet and hike from three to six miles. You can swim in one of the waterfall pools along the way, so make sure to bring a suit and a towel. This tour costs $59 per person for a half-day hike and $105 for a full day.
If you like a more rugged environment, the West Maui Waterfall Hike may be a better choice. The mountains are actually just one big extinct volcano, molded over the centuries into steep, almost vertical canyons. The “heart” of the mountain is reached by a narrow valley with a river running along it. Here you’ll pass a thick bamboo jungle straight out of a nature magazine, with the sunlight tinted green by the lush leaves. The hike to 1,200 feet can leave you exhausted, so reward yourself with a dip in a freshwater pool! This route only takes half a day and costs $69 per person.
The Maui Rainforest Hike takes you through a wide, deep valley on the east of the West Maui Mountains. One of the most scenic tours on offer, it features cloud-covered rivers, steep canyon walls, and tall waterfalls that flow gracefully from a height of several hundred feet. Along the way, you’ll get to see (and sometimes try) local vegetation such as mango, loquat, and Christmas berry. The four-mile, half-day hike costs $69 per person and requires moderate hiking skill.

At Haleakala Crater you can do several day hikes. It is relatively safe because while you may be doing the hike solo, you will come across other hikers along the trail if you do a day hike. Even though there are other hikers on the trail, it will not detract from the solo experience, as Haleakala is a vast landscape.
