It hadn’t been a good year money-wise, but we had promised each other last year that we would take a break and take that Kauai vacation that had been lingering around in our brains for the last decade or so. We looked at Kauai hotel options, and decided that the Hale Ikena Nui fit our budgets and our attitudes.
This is no place if you crave excitement and non-stop activity, because it’s located in Kalaheo, which is a really small town with not much going on. Which was perfect for us, because we were just spent from trying to keep the business afloat and everybody happy, including employees and family.
Patti made us feel right at home, especially after a long series of delays with the flights. Patti is not a native Hawaiian. I’m not sure how many of those are left, but she came over from the mainland a long time ago, and has gone native, so to speak.
We stayed in the Main Suite, which was large — the size of a small house. No worries about having to creep past any other guests or people to get to your room: there is a private entrance. We had a full kitchen, and did cook at least three nights while we were there. We just got so lazy that we didn’t want to get out.
We did do the Zip Line tour. I’m not big on heights, so I had to suck it up for this, but it’s a great experience and a different way to see the island and sights.
Mostly, we just hung out and read and relaxed. I did bring my laptop, so I could check the news and my emails, to make sure nothing really bad was going on back home.
