I had lost my job, and was at a loss as to what to do, so I thought I would go someplace that I really like to decide what to do with the next few years of my life. This would not be a Maui vacation with a nice Maui hotel. That didn’t seem right. I needed to do something serious with my time, as my funds were limited.

The Retreat house at St. John’s Episcopal Church was available and as it turned out I was the only one using the place. At first it felt strange to be the only one there, as it had four bedrooms, but after a day I began to enjoy the setting and the silence.

The Church itself was open, but I didn’t use it. I’m not Episcopalian. I spent most of the time just walking the grounds and thinking about what to do.

I was jobless and divorced, and things were not going to get better unless I really took a different direction in my life. I did go to the beaches several times, and talked with some strangers I met there and in town.

I prepared some meals, but everything was simple. Kind of funny, really, since I am a chef. Or I was a chef. I will be again, no doubt.

This was a good break for me to take. I recharged my batteries and finally decided on a new course of action. It wouldn’t be easy, but I would go back to the mainland.

Not an ordinary Maul vacation, to be sure. Not fancy Maui hotel or resort, but maybe with success in my new plan, that would be the case next time.
