Our stay at the Eco House of the Kahua Institutute was probably the most unique Maui vacation that we ever took. We had looked at all the Maui hotels and decided that we needed something different, so we looked into the Kahua Institue. A professor friend had stayed there at one time.

We arrived and were really surprised. Most of our Maui vacations has been staying at the typical Maui hotel, with room service and the like, but this was completely different.

Maria loved the bamboo bridge that lead to the entrance of the Eco House. She thought it was so different. It is built entirely of bamboo, and looked entirely different from what you might think a structure of bamboo might look like. Inside it was nicely furnished, but sparse. Maria said it was “serene”.

One feature that is really unique is the outdoor shower. Taking a shower there is a liberating experience. You also have a great view of the ocean.

The grounds of the Kahua Institute are a wonder themselves. There are a couple of nature trails that lead you to the ocean and past waterfalls.

The foliage is very colorful, and we began to think about coming back sometime soon, maybe for a longer stay. You can rent the Eco House and another, the Opua House, long term, too. It sounded like a good idea.

This was a very relaxing stay, with very accommodating hosts, and we enjoyed it a lot. We didn’t do much, but sit around and read and swim and sun.
