It wasn’t my idea to stay at the Old Wailuku Inn. We had been planning our Maui vacation for nearly a year.
I wanted something on the beach, but Tara wanted to be more in the city, so she booked this one day when I was too busy to call her back at work.
I was upset, I must admit, and stayed that way until we got there.
But Tom and Janice, who run the place, were so friendly that I changed my mind in a few hours. So this was not going to be a traditional Maui vacation, but what I didn’t know was that I didn’t want a typical trip.
Our room was the Ulu Room, which has a whirlpool tub and was furnished like Hawaii used to look like in the 1920s or 30s. I was really starting to decompress. I could even see staying here on business.
The beach and golf is not that far away, and I liked the idea that it was kind of like home, since I travel so much for work and stay in bland cookie cutter type of rooms. One thing Tara didn’t like was that there was just one time for breakfast. It was at 8 am and that was that. One morning we slept in and missed it. We went out for breakfast. You could still smell the home cooked meal
though.
A nice thing, too, is that the staff kind of minds their own business. We walked the grounds –and the gardens are really nice– and they didn’t walk over and want to start chatting. That was nice.
