Café Pesto in downtown Hilo has earned something of a reputation for providing food that is fresh, flavorful and innovative. The café began its operation in tandem with the evolution of Hawaiian regional cuisine, with which it is now intricately linked. Having begun in Kawaihae Harbor with a modest-sized pizzeria offering take-out food, the owners extended their market reach to Hilo, all the while maintaining high standards in terms of consistency, quality, creativity and affordability, even in the face of stiff competition.
Café Pesto found its Hilo home in the newly renovated St Hata building in 1992. This location has high ceilings, rattan chairs and a brass-embellished kitchen with a pizza oven fired by ohia wood. All this old-world decor takes patrons on a journey into the past. However, the enticing and colourful cuisine with which they are greeted serves as a reminder of a more contemporary Hawaii. With two locations on the Big Island offering residents and visitors high-quality food, Café Pesto aims to preserve the charming history of the locality while delivering the best and most up-to-date regional cuisine. As a result of these aspirations, the menu offers a choice of fresh catch, grilled Kulana beef, grilled chicken and mushroom risotto, a selection of wood-fired pizzas and the option for diners to create their own pizzas. The menu is rounded off with a selection of fresh desserts, soft drinks, teas and coffees.
Café Pesto is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week – from Monday through to Sunday. Business hours are from 11.00am until 9.00pm from Sunday through to Thursday and from 11.00am until 10.00pm on Fridays and Saturdays. A kid’s menu is available too and all menu items are available for take-out. Cafe Pesto also offers a catering service, with personalized menus available to suit individual requirements and budget.
