Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation, Big Island

Founded in 1998, Mountain Thunder is a family-owned and –operated coffee farm located in the Kaloko Cloud Forest in Kailua-Kona. They grow premium as well as organic Kona coffee and have been featured on TV shows, such as Dirty Jobs, Unwrapped and A Taste For Adventure. Visitors can take part in either a free farm tour or VIP tour.

Admission:
Free farm tours available
VIP tour is 3 hours long and includes an 8 oz coffee bag and lunch. Cost is $135 per person (children under 5 are free). Advance reservation is necessary.

Tours:
Coffee farm offers free tours and VIP tours at two location: Kaloko and Kainaliu
Farm opens at 9 am and tours start on the hour, every hour, from 10 am to 4 pm. Tours are offered Monday through Saturday at their Kaloko location and Monday through Sunday at their Kainaliu location. VIP tours start at 10 am. Japanese language tours are offered at the Kaloko farm every Tuesday and Friday from 10 am to 5 pm.

Directions: To Kaloko location: From Highway 19 and 190 junction in downtown Kailua-Kona, drive uphill on 190 passing the junction of 180/190. Continue on 190 for about 1 mile to Kaloko Drive. Turn right and proceed up Kaloko to the 3rd Hao Street where you will see the Mountain Thunder sign. Turn right and follow to end.

To Kainaliu location: The Kainaliu location is located in Kainaliu just south mile marker 113 on Highway 11, across from Mango Court.
