Wood
Valley is a mountainside city path on the southeastern
side of the Big Island approximately 16 miles away from
the town of Naalehu. The crescent-shaped and fertile
valley lies at the base of Mauna Loa, the largest
volcano in the world. Tucked away in a lush tropical
forest, the fertile Wood Valley is surrounded by exotic
floras and plants. The town also boasts of coffee
estates, flower farms, macadamia nut farms, and tea
farms.
Located off the beaten path of the Kau District, Wood
Valley offers tropical Hawaiian experience without the
usual tourist crowd that flocks Big Island’s urban and
resort towns. The town offers true respite from the
hustle and bustle of the urban world. Thus, many
artists, philosophers, writers, along with some Hawaiian
families, and those who seek solitude consider Wood
Valley their home.
But despite its seclusion, Wood Valley doesn’t lack
attractions. It is close to green sand beaches and the
Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. There you can swim or bask in
the sand with sea turtles. Wood Valley is also just
minutes away from the historic villages of Kau and Puna
regions, the Olaa Forest Reserve, and the Volcanoes
National Park.
Wood Valley is also the home of the Wood Valley Temple
and Retreat Center. Owned by Tibetan Buddhists, the
temple offers a place for relaxation. Peacocks roam
freely the grounds, while the colorfully painted temple
makes a striking contrast against the backdrop of the
lush green valley.
Wood Valley offers little amenities. For grocery,
hardware, bread and other supplies, you may drive to the
nearby towns of Naalehu and Waiohinu.
