Papaikou at a Glance
Papaikuo
is a top tourist spot located on the eastern sides of the Big Island
along the Onomea Bay region. It is situated near three of Big
Island’s major airports: the Hilo International Airport, the Kona
International Airport, and the Waimea Kohala International Airport.
Papaikuo is more famously associated with the Hawaii Tropical
Botanical Garden, a 25-acre plant sanctuary which is home to more
than 2000 unique and diverse flora from all over the world. The
botanical garden also features a number of trails, aviaries, a
marine preserve, and flamingo and duck ponds. Other highlights of
the town include the Amauma and Rainbow Falls, the Panaewa
Rainforest Zoo, and the Liliuokani Park. Nearby also are the Onemea
rainforest and the scenic road to Onemea Bay.A 2007 survey shows
that Papaikou had a resident population of 1,641. The community is
comprised mainly by Asians, notably Filipinos (22.5%) and Japanese
(21.1%). Other Asians comprise 1.8% of the population. Caucasians
(14.6%), Native Hawaiians, and Hispanics (6.9%) also represent a
good number in the community. Meanwhile, people from two or more
races altogether form 27.5% of the entire population. With only
about 1119 people per square mile, Papaikuo is not densely
populated.
In the past, Papaikuo’s economy relied mainly on its sugar,
coffee, and cattle industry. Today, like most towns in the Big
Island, tourism provides the main economic boost for the community.
Papaikuo’s average household income was estimated at $55,000 in
2007. However, 15% of the residents were still below the poverty
line.
Papaikuo’s zip code is 96781.
