Ninole
is a remote community located between Honohina and
Weloka in the Hamakuha District of the Big Island.
Elevated at 259.04 feet above sea level, it is
conveniently located to many of the region’s best places
such as the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, the Akaka
Falls State Park, and Hapuna Beach. Still, anyone
doesn’t need to go far to see what Hamakuha Coast.
Ninole boasts its own tropical attractions. Ninole
offers Waikaumalo Park and a hiking trail. There’s also
the beautiful Nanue Falls, and the Umauma Falls, which
offers a view of the Mauna Kea. Surrounded by ocean,
Ninole also offers beaches and ocean views.
According to the latest 2007 census count, 192 people
had chosen the 3.6-square mile town to be their home.
Males (52.7%) slightly outnumbered the females(47.3).
The town’s population density was approximated at 54
people per square mile. Though majority of the residents
are Caucasians taking approximately 45.6% of the
population, Ninole is racially diverse as much as Hawaii
in general. Asians (Filipinos, Japanese, Chinese)
comprise about 22%, Native Hawaiians 6%, and Hispanics
8.8%. People from two or more races account for 17.6% of
the entire community.
Though sparsely populated, the town is more affluent
than every other town in the Big Island. In 2007, its
aggregated household income was estimated at $97, 788,
higher than most towns and higher than the state average
of $63, 746. Its percentage of people living below the
poverty level is also low at just 3.6%, while its cost
of living index was 89.8.
