Mountain View at a Glance
On the
eastern coast of the Big Island approximately 10.5 miles
away from Hilo lies the reclusive but scenic town of
Mountain View. True to its name, the town provides ample
view of a mountain--- in fact, the world’s tallest
mountain and second largest volcano--- the Mauna Kea.
Elevated at 1440 feet and surrounded by land, Mountain
View has no lava shoreline or glimmering Pacific Ocean
to view. Nonetheless, there’s no lack of scenic spots or
activities to charm tourists. Biking and hiking, golf,
and exploring tide pools are some of the activities that
abound in the area.
Furthermore, the town offers pristine nature brimming
particularly with exotic plants (such as anthoriums,
Ohia, and wild ginger), and rainbows. Mountain View also
abounds with plant reproduction facilities such as
nurseries, greenhouses, and tropical flower gardens.
Owing to the town’s rich and fertile land, Mountain View
was also historically involved in sugar trade. It was
even once connected to the city of Hilo by the Hawaii
Consolidated Road. Since the decline of the sugar
industry in Hawaii, Mountain View has been involved
primarily in coffee production. Today, the town boasts
of several coffee mills including the most renowned of
them all, the Hilo Coffee Mill.
Around 3,249 people inhabited the 56.6 square-mile town.
Though it is more populated than other Big Island towns,
the town has a very low population density of only 52
people per square mile. The community is a mix of many
ethnicities and races, the largest percentage of which
are Caucasians (22.8%), Asians (21.9%), and Hispanics
(16.1%).
Mountain View’s zip code is 96771.
