Volcano Art Center at a Glance
Mount Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, makes a
fitting location for this unique art gallery on eastern Big Island.
The Volcano Art Center features works from over 300 local artists,
offering a glimpse of Hawaiian culture and its rich natural
heritage. Art and culture buffs will surely love the interesting
pieces, fascinating displays, and the small-town atmosphere that
pervades the whole place.
The building was once a backpackers’ inn that last operated some 100
years ago. This explains why the inside is divided into small rooms,
now designated as mini-galleries. Remnants of the old inn can still
be seen around the place, most notably the lobby fireplace which is
still functional to this day. From the rooms, you can look out the
windows at the dynamic environment that inspired the artworks
inside.
Many of the works are up for sale and are very reasonably priced.
Items range from photos of the local landscape to large paintings
depicting local history and culture. There are also classes and
workshops offered year-round, covering everything from arts and
crafts to music, dance, and various performing arts.
The Volcano Art Center is part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National
Park, one of the largest and most visited attractions in the state.
From the gallery, you can see the rest of the park and take a hike
up to the Kilauea Crater. Exploring can take the better part of your
day, so load up on food and water and make sure to wear comfortable
shoes.Volcano Art Center in Bullet Points
