Puukohola Heiau at a Glance

At first glance, the Puukohola Heiau closely resembles the pyramids of Egypt. But look closer and the details reveal a distinctly Hawaiian flair: the native materials, the intricate construction, and the air of mystery and power surrounding it. The heiau is where King Kamehameha the Great brought down his last opponent, Keoua, and united the Hawaiian Islands under his reign.

Today, the temple is part of an official National Historic Site. The park features an interpretive trail leading from the visitor center to the ruins of the heiau, with descriptions and educational plaques provided along the way. The place is maintained by the National Park Service and is continuously being updated to add information, improve the trails, and offer more cultural attractions.

The hike is as much a nature trip as a historical one. A typical walk will take you along pristine grounds and offer great views of the nearby village. There are no designated lookout points, but you can stop at any point to rest, grab a bite, or take pictures. The park is fairly remote-the nearest city Waimea is a fair distance away-which helps preserve the serene atmosphere of the heiau.

Every August, the Puukohola Heiau plays host to the biggest display of Hawaiian culture on the island. The Hawaiian Cultural Festival celebrates local customs and traditions, from the food and clothing to various forms of art. Visitors can join a wide range of activities such as Hawaiian handicrafts, native dances, music performances, and educational games for children.
