Onizuka Center for International Astronomy at a Glance

The Onizuka Center for International Astronomy is, simply put, a stargazer’s dream. Along the slopes of the Mauna Kea, over 13,000 feet above sea level, you’re literally closer to the stars-and the night sky views provide spectacular proof. If you’re coming from the bright lights of the big city, this place will remind you why our ancestors were so fascinated with the skies.

The visitor station pales in comparison to its natural surroundings, but it’s a stop worth taking. Inside, the staff will give you a weather update and help you adjust to the change in altitude. Mauna Kea has one of the steepest elevations in the world, so it’s easy to get sick from the abrupt rise. However, as long as you’re fully prepared and follow precautions, the trip is safe and well worth every step.

The naked-eye views are great by themselves, but the skies through a telescope are even more breathtaking. On a regular day, you’ll find amateur astronomers setting up their telescopes outside the observatory, and most of them will let you have a look. This isn’t a regular service of the center, but you should find at least one or two on most evenings.

The best time to visit the center is late afternoon to early evening. There’s a picnic table just outside the visitor station, but you’ll have to pack your own dinner. After the briefing, grab a bite to make sure you have enough energy to reach the peak. If you set off while it’s still light, you should reach the summit just in time to catch the sunset.
