Nani Mau Gardens at a Glance
Its name couldn’t have been more appropriate. Nani Mau literally
means “forever beautiful,” and you’ll believe it the moment
you set foot in the Nani Mau Gardens of Hilo, Hawaii. Over
50 acres of lush greenery, exotic flowers, and native palms
can be found throughout the grounds, with plenty of shade
and rest stops for a day of leisurely strolling.
About half the land is filled with various native flowers,
some of them found only in Hawaii. The orchid gardens and
tropical fruit orchards are some of the biggest draws. The
paved pathways wind beautifully down the gardens, giving
you excellent views of the garden from all angles. Along
the way, you’ll pass an anthurium grove, ginger garden,
hibiscus garden, ferns and palms, and a number of small
waterfalls.
Visitors can opt to get around on foot or join a narrated
tram tour. While on the tram, a guide offers interesting
bits of information on the history and function of each
native plant. If you prefer to go around alone, you can
pick up a garden map free from the administration office
and explore the area as you please.
After hours of exploring, visitors can take a break at the
garden restaurant where a delicious Island Buffet is served
every day. This is al fresco dining at its best: imagine
helping yourself to the best local fare while sitting under
the shade of rare trees. You can also check out the gift
shop near the exit, which offers various Nani Mau logo items
and souvenirs.Nani Mau Gardens in Bullet Points
